During a Tuesday appearance on The Lead with Jake Tapper, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said Democrats believe the United States must respond to the actions of authoritarian regimes such as Iran and Venezuela, but he sharply criticized how President Donald Trump has handled recent military operations.
In the interview, host Jake Tapper questioned what the Democratic Party’s position is on foreign policy, particularly regarding Trump’s decisions to conduct military operations targeting Iran’s nuclear weapons program and to order an operation aimed at removing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.
Tapper asked whether Democrats support or oppose those military actions, noting that the operations represent major examples of Trump’s aggressive foreign policy approach.
In response, Martin acknowledged that Democrats recognize the serious threat posed by both regimes. He described the governments in Iran and Venezuela as brutal, accusing them of terrorizing civilians and engaging in indiscriminate violence against their own people.
He emphasized that Democrats agree the United States cannot ignore such actions and must respond in some way.
However, Martin argued that the issue is not whether the U.S. should act, but how it should act.
He criticized the Trump administration’s approach as “callous” and lacking a clear, well-developed strategy. According to Martin, military action without careful planning and without consulting congressional leaders risks escalating tensions and undermining stability, particularly in the Middle East.
Martin warned that Iran’s situation, in particular, carries enormous regional consequences, potentially threatening broader peace and stability. He stressed that any response must be strategic, calculated, and fully consider the risks involved, rather than being driven by impulsive or short-term decision-making.
He also expressed concern that the administration had not sufficiently worked with Congress before launching such operations, saying that bypassing consultation with lawmakers creates dangerous precedents and weakens democratic oversight of military force.
At the same time, Martin made clear that Democrats are not defending the Iranian or Venezuelan governments. Instead, he said Democrats agree that action is necessary to address human rights abuses and instability caused by those regimes.
Where Democrats differ, he said, is in their belief that the Trump administration’s approach lacks clarity and long-term strategic objectives.
Martin concluded by saying Democrats intend to speak out forcefully on these issues, supporting efforts to confront authoritarian regimes while pushing for a more thoughtful, coordinated, and clearly defined U.S. foreign policy strategy.
