President Donald Trump delivered a dramatic and celebratory moment during his Tuesday State of the Union address, announcing that Olympic gold medal–winning goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

The announcement came as members of the U.S. men’s hockey team entered the chamber to thunderous applause, proudly wearing their gold medals after their unforgettable victory.

Lawmakers rose to their feet as chants of “USA! USA! USA!” echoed throughout the chamber, creating an emotional and patriotic atmosphere.

The applause lasted well over a minute and evolved into a standing ovation as the team stood together, smiling and acknowledging the recognition. Clearly energized by the moment, Trump praised the players’ determination and achievement.

“Here with us tonight is a group of winners who just made the entire nation proud!” Trump declared, as cheers continued from lawmakers and guests. In a moment of humor, he added, “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen them get up,” joking about some Democratic lawmakers. “And actually, not all of them did get up,” he said, drawing laughter from parts of the chamber.

Trump reserved special praise for Hellebuyck, describing his performance as one of the greatest he had ever witnessed. The president explained that he consulted the entire team before making the decision to award Hellebuyck the Medal of Freedom.

“I’ve never seen a goaltender play as well as Connor,” Trump said. “I just want to tell you that the members of this great hockey squad will be very happy to hear, based on their vote and my vote — and in this case, my vote was more important — that I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honor.”

The announcement triggered another wave of applause and celebration inside the chamber.

“It’s called the highest civilian honor in our country — the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Trump said. “It has been given to many athletes over the years, but when I say many, not too many. Like 12.”

Trump emphasized that every single member of the team supported Hellebuyck receiving the prestigious honor, highlighting the respect and admiration he commands among his teammates.

The 32-year-old Michigan native currently serves as the star goaltender for the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League, where he has built a reputation as one of the most dominant and consistent goalies in professional hockey.

The recognition followed the team’s dramatic gold medal victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where the United States defeated longtime rival Canada in a thrilling overtime final on Sunday. The victory marked a defining moment for American hockey and reignited national pride in the sport.

Following the historic win, Trump personally invited the team to visit the White House and attend his address to Congress as special guests.

In a video recorded inside the locker room moments after the championship win, FBI Director Kash Patel was seen holding his phone as Trump spoke directly to the players.

“You were all unbelievable,” Trump told them, his voice filled with excitement and pride.

The team immediately accepted his invitation to attend the speech.

“We’re in!” the players responded enthusiastically.

Trump closed the call with a personal message to the team, once again singling out their star goaltender.

“We love you guys. Congratulations,” he said. “I’m going to shake hands with everybody, but I’ve got to shake hands with that goalie.”

The moment marked not only a celebration of athletic excellence but also a rare and symbolic recognition of hockey on one of the nation’s biggest political stages.

Hellebuyck’s upcoming Medal of Freedom ceremony will place him among an elite group of Americans honored not just for their athletic achievements, but for inspiring the nation.
