Several Democrat members of Congress are set to boycott President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address and instead attend a counter-event near the Capitol organized by groups that have received funding tied to billionaire donor George Soros, according to a report by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
At least a dozen House and Senate Democrats plan to attend the “People’s State of the Union,” a rally hosted by MoveOn Civic Action and MediasTouch. A promotional release for the event was posted by MoveOn ahead of the speech.
MoveOn Civic Action has received $3,424,995 in grants between 2016 and 2024 from the Open Society Foundations, the organization founded by Soros, according to foundation grant records. Soros has also made direct contributions to MoveOn in the past, including $2.5 million in 2003, according to publicly available nonprofit data.
In 2023, Open Society Foundations awarded a $3 million grant to the Indivisible Project to support social welfare activities, according to the foundation’s grant database. Open Society Foundations, Indivisible, and MoveOn did not respond to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation, the report states.
Lawmakers attending the rally who have previously received campaign contributions from Soros family members or groups tied to them include Sens. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Chris Murphy of Connecticut, Tina Smith of Minnesota, and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, along with Reps. Becca Balint of Vermont, Greg Casar of Texas, Veronica Escobar of Texas, Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Delia Ramirez of Illinois, and Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey.
According to Federal Election Commission records cited in the report, Markey received contributions from Indivisible Action and MoveOn entities. Merkley received donations from Indivisible and MoveOn. Murphy has received contributions from MoveOn as well as members of the Soros family, including George Soros and Alexander Soros. Smith’s campaign received donations from multiple Soros family members. Van Hollen’s campaign also received contributions from members of the Soros family.
FEC data shows Balint received contributions from MoveOn and Indivisible. Casar’s campaign received funds from MoveOn, Indivisible, and George Soros. Escobar’s campaign received donations from MoveOn. Jayapal’s campaign records show contributions from Indivisible, MoveOn, and members of the Soros family. Ramirez received funds from MoveOn in 2025. Watson Coleman’s campaign received donations from MoveOn and Alexander Soros, according to FEC data cited in the report.
None of the lawmakers’ offices responded to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation, according to the report.
The rally is intended to counter what organizers described in a Feb. 18 press release as “President Trump’s night full of lies.”
Soros and affiliated political organizations have provided substantial financial support to Democratic causes in recent election cycles. Reports have documented contributions to various state-level and national efforts, including funding related to redistricting initiatives in California.
