A breathtaking sunrise in the Alberta Rockies became more than just a wedding backdrop — it turned into a powerful reminder of how nature can reward patience, courage and love.

A moment that felt like a gift

Jihae and Stephen decided to exchange their vows in an intimate mountaintop ceremony on July 12, 2025, choosing to share the experience with only their wedding photographers — married duo Marcin and Dorota of BDFK Photography. In the early hours before dawn, the four of them set out together, hiking for more than three hours through darkness to reach Tent Ridge in Spray Valley Provincial Park, the photographers later shared with People.

What they didn’t know then was that the mountain was about to surprise them with something extraordinary.

As the photographers later reflected:
“You never know what nature is about to gift you.”

Beauty born from struggle

Long before sunrise, the journey tested everyone’s nerves. Rain began to fall, wind pushed hard against their faces, and the trail grew increasingly harsh as they climbed higher.

At one point, Marcin admitted he panicked, worried the entire plan might collapse.

“Rain started, and the wind was blowing hard in our faces. I worried we might have to abort the plan and shoot at locations lower in the valley, so it felt like all the effort might be for nothing,” he explained. “We had checked the forecast, so we expected a little rain in the early morning, but didn’t realize the wind would be so strong.”

While the storm raged, the couple stayed calm, pressing forward step by step — their quiet composure anchoring the group.

A sky that felt unreal

As dawn approached, the photographers began shooting portraits, focusing everyone toward the softening horizon. Behind them, the sky churned dramatically, unnoticed at first.

Then Jihae suddenly asked everyone to turn around.

What they saw made them gasp — twin rainbows blazing across dark clouds, cutting through the storm like ribbons of light.

The photographers later described the scene in vivid emotional terms:

The scenery “felt wild, cinematic and completely surreal … [with] the kind of light photographers dream about and couples never forget.”

In an instant, the calm shoot became chaotic as excitement surged through the group.

“That’s when the craziness started,” Marcin recalled. “We reacted like children because we knew those sunrise rainbows wouldn’t last long. We had a very short window to use the moment.”

They rushed into action, calling out poses, repositioning angles and urging the couple to move quickly.

“We asked the couple to do one pose, then another, then another, to walk, to run — trying to capture as much as possible and not miss the opportunity,” he said. “It was one of the best moments Mother Nature has created for us in our career.”

Love at the center of the storm

Amid the dramatic skies, what struck the photographers most wasn’t just the scenery — it was the couple’s presence in the moment.

They recalled how Jihae and Stephen responded as nature seemed to show off around them:

“Jihae and Stephen stood together on that ridgeline, reading their vows with the wind in their hair and the biggest skies surrounding them. Laughing, holding each other close, completely present in the moment — it wasn’t just beautiful, it was powerful.”

The photographers summed up the emotional impact simply:

“What a morning. What a sky. What a love.”

When imperfection creates magic

Ironically, the very storm that caused worry and panic was what made the unforgettable moment possible.

Reflecting afterward, the photographers shared a truth shaped by years of experience:

“Most clients prefer sunny days,” he noted, “but honestly, it’s clouds, wind and rain that can create real magic.”

For Jihae and Stephen, the unexpected weather transformed their wedding into something symbolic — a reminder that beauty often appears only after uncertainty.

A beginning written in the sky

In the end, the double rainbow became more than a breathtaking image. It marked the beginning of a marriage shaped by resilience, trust and shared wonder.

As the photographers later reflected:

“Jihae [and] Stephen chose to begin their day in the most unforgettable way — hiking through the night under dark skies, headlamps lighting the trail, hearts full of excitement for what sunrise in the Rockies might bring.”

And when the sky finally burst into color, they described it simply:

“And then … the rainbows came. Not just one, but multiple bursts of color stretching across the sky, wrapping around the peaks.”

In that fleeting window between storm and sunrise, the couple witnessed something extraordinary — a moment that seemed to promise that even in life’s wildest weather, love can still find its brightest light.
