A large-scale Russian missile and drone attack struck the suburbs of Kyiv overnight, killing one person and damaging multiple districts, Ukrainian emergency officials said Sunday.
Ukraine’s Emergency Service reported that one person was killed in the Kyiv region and eight others, including a child, were rescued from beneath rubble after residential buildings were destroyed. Fires broke out across five suburban districts as a result of the barrage.
In the village of Putrivka in Kyiv’s Fastiv district, first responders worked to extract residents trapped under debris following the strikes.
Russia also targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, igniting significant fires that were later extinguished, according to emergency officials.
Ukraine’s Air Force said the overnight assault involved 297 drones and 50 missiles of various types. Of those, 274 drones and 33 missiles were shot down or otherwise neutralized. Fourteen missiles and 23 drones struck 14 separate locations, while three missiles were unaccounted for, the Air Force said.
The attack comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine enters its fourth year. Despite renewed diplomatic efforts over the past year led by the United States to push toward a peace settlement, Ukrainian cities have continued to face frequent aerial assaults. Russian strikes have increasingly focused on energy facilities, leaving civilians without electricity and heating during winter conditions.
In a separate incident, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post Sunday that an explosion in the western city of Lviv killed one person and injured 25 others. Authorities arrested one individual in connection with the blast. Officials said the explosion was unrelated to Russia’s overnight aerial attack.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 86 Ukrainian drones overnight.
In the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Luhansk, Moscow-installed leader Leonid Pasechnik said two Ukrainian drones struck an oil depot, injuring a security guard and setting a fuel tank on fire.
Both sides continue to report strikes deep behind front lines as the conflict remains active across multiple regions.
