Canberra describes transit as routine Indo-Pacific deployment as Beijing confirms tracking operations.

An Australian naval frigate passed through the Taiwan Strait over the weekend in what Canberra described as a routine deployment, prompting monitoring operations by China’s military, according to statements from officials on both sides.
A government source said the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Toowoomba, an Anzac-class frigate, conducted the passage on Friday and Saturday as part of a broader “Regional Presence Deployment in the Indo-Pacific region.”
“The Toowoomba conducted a routine transit through the Taiwan Strait,” the source said, adding that “all interactions with foreign ships and aircraft were safe and professional.”
China views the Taiwan Strait as part of its territorial waters and has frequently objected to foreign naval vessels transiting the waterway. Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan, which is governed separately and operates as a self-ruled democracy.
China’s state-backed Global Times newspaper, citing an unnamed military source, reported that “the Chinese People’s Liberation Army carried out full-process tracking, monitoring, and alert operations throughout the transit.”
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said it maintains close oversight of activity in the airspace and waters surrounding the island and reiterated its position that the strait constitutes an international waterway where all nations have the right to freedom of navigation.
“The Ministry of National Defence will not proactively disclose the movements of aircraft and ships of friendly allied countries,” the statement said, without providing additional detail.
The United States regularly sails warships through the Taiwan Strait, typically every few months, drawing objections from Beijing. Several U.S. allies — including France, Australia, Britain and Canada — have also conducted transits on occasion.
China has expanded its military presence around Taiwan in recent years and conducted military exercises near the island in late December. Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims, maintaining that the island’s political future can only be determined by its own population.
The Australian transit marks the latest naval movement in a region where strategic competition and military signaling remain ongoing.
