I wondered whether to share this experience at first, but decided it was worth it.
The more such moments are shared, the more humanity can collectively realize—through shared stories—that there is far more to our bodies and the world around us than what is visible. Modern science often sidesteps the invisible and intangible, yet many remain open to the idea that subtle, sometimes palpably real connections exist between beings. While we need not cling to these experiences themselves, it can be deeply rewarding to partake in them and awaken to their deeper layers.
Today, I returned to my favorite cat café in Taipei with my wife and mother-in-law, and something truly extraordinary happened.

There’s a cat there named Gouzui (which means “Cute” in Taiwanese Hokkien). I suspect he remembered me from our last visit on Mother’s Day 2024—he even appears in the video we posted on Gan Jing World that day. Watch it here: https://www.ganjingworld.com/video/1gob9dq05b32r1iXt0elA6feS17a1c?playlist_id=1ggk92lvpvtQaiCphiEkrBo1j20p
I’ve been around cats my whole life. My family had one when I was growing up, and I’ve always loved their company. But today, Gouzui gave me an experience I’ve never had before—one that felt almost profound.
At first, he sat regally on the counter, aloof from everyone. When we went to pay for our drinks, I reached out to stroke him. He tensed for a moment, then relaxed completely, stood up, and began rubbing against my hand. After a good pat, I sat down. Gouzui stayed on the counter, ignoring everyone else.
Much later, he finally hopped down. He sat beside our sofa, so I thought he wanted more attention. I reached out—and he gently bit me. I took it as his polite way of saying, “I’m good for now, just let me be.” So I turned my attention to little Huang Huang, an incredibly sweet cat who was kneading my mother-in-law’s legs in pure bliss. I happily petted Huang Huang while Gouzui sat quietly nearby.

Then, instead of walking away, Gouzui jumped onto the armrest right beside me and simply… stayed. He inched closer and closer, occasionally stretching his neck over my leg, but mostly just sat there calmly, stoically, in companionable silence (see photo).

And that’s when something beautiful happened.
I felt a deep, tangible connection—far beyond the usual joy of cute, fluffy cats. A warm, grounding sensation bloomed in my chest, right where Indian traditions call the heart chakra. It was peaceful, comforting, almost meditative. I wasn't even patting or touching Gouzui at that time; it was pure presence. I sensed we were quietly attuned to each other, a wordless mutual understanding, a gentle vibrational resonance. I’ve never felt anything quite like it with a cat.
The café owner later told us Gouzui almost never lets anyone touch him. Most people can’t even get close—if they try, he bolts out the back. Yet today he chose to stay beside me for a long time.
I’ve heard stories of profound connections with dolphins or elephants, but rarely with cats. A quick search showed others have described nearly identical experiences, which made me smile.
Today deepened my appreciation for cats in a way I didn’t expect. No wonder the ancient Egyptians revered them. In all my years around cats, this moment with Gouzui stands alone.
If you’re thinking of adopting a cat, a place like the cat café we visited today is a wonderful way to start.
It’s full of rescue cats waiting for homes, and so far they’ve helped over 500 find their forever families. Spend time with them, and who knows—you might be chosen, and feel something truly special.
