Senate Republicans are increasingly urging President Donald Trump to take a stand in crucial GOP primary battles as control of the Senate hangs in the balance. With midterm elections approaching and potential losses looming, leaders within the party are anxious about Trump’s inaction, fearing it could have dire consequences for their electoral prospects.
As the GOP faces significant challenges in traditionally strongholds like Texas and Georgia, party operatives warn that failing to secure victories in pivotal primaries may jeopardize their ability to maintain Senate control. Key Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, have expressed concern over the financial implications of a divided party, with estimates suggesting that defending a weakened candidate in Texas could cost over $200 million.
The situation is particularly dire for Senator John Cornyn in Texas, who is preparing for a competitive primary. With the likelihood of a costly runoff increasing, party leaders worry that if Cornyn loses, resources that could be deployed elsewhere will be drained. “It’s a very difficult race, and one that’s going to be a lot more expensive to hold the seat, Thune remarked to CNN. When asked why Trump seems to be ignoring pleas for support, he added, “I’m probably not the right person to answer that question.
In Georgia, there’s a call for Trump to help resolve a contentious primary battle as Republicans aim to challenge Senator Jon Ossoff, the only Senate Democrat running in a state Trump won in 2024. Republicans across various levels have privately urged the former president to intervene and support a candidate who can unify the party against a common foe.
Beyond Texas and Georgia, concerns have also been raised in places like Kentucky, where GOP candidates fear that an uninformed choice could lead to the election of a second statewide Democrat. The intensity of the situation has reached a point where one House Republican candidate running for governor in Tennessee even threatened to prolong a recent government shutdown to obtain Trump’s assurance that he wouldn’t endorse his primary opponent.
The urgency for Trump’s involvement has intensified following unexpected results in a recent Texas special election, which highlighted the vulnerabilities of the GOP in the upcoming midterms. With high stakes involved and the potential for significant repercussions, GOP leaders hope that the former president will heed their calls and take a more active role in guiding the party through these critical electoral battles.
