JPMorgan Chase is preparing to significantly expand its physical footprint across the United States, with plans to open more than 160 new branches in over 30 states in 2026, according to a report by the Financial Times. The move is part of a broader multibillion-dollar investment aimed at strengthening the bank’s brick-and-mortar network and deepening its presence in key growth markets.

The expansion is expected to be particularly robust in states such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Massachusetts and Tennessee. The Financial Times, citing an interview with Chase’s consumer banking leadership, described the initiative as a “major expansion” designed to accelerate the bank’s push for greater market share in retail banking.

This latest round of branch openings builds on a 2024 commitment by JPMorgan to launch more than 500 new branches within three years. The bank has steadily expanded beyond its traditional strongholds in major metropolitan areas, targeting faster-growing regions in the Southeast and other parts of the country where population inflows and business activity have been rising.

Under its Chase consumer brand, JPMorgan has already established branches in every U.S. state except Hawaii and Alaska. The strategy reflects a long-term objective to capture 15% of all retail deposits nationwide a significant milestone in the highly competitive U.S. banking sector.

Jennifer Roberts, chief executive of Chase consumer banking, emphasized the importance of physical branches in achieving that goal. She noted that building branches and entering new markets is a critical component of increasing deposit share, underscoring the continued relevance of in-person banking services even as digital platforms grow.

The renewed focus on physical expansion comes at a time when many competitors have reduced branch networks in favor of cost-cutting and digital transformation. JPMorgan’s approach suggests confidence that combining digital capabilities with an expanded physical presence can help it win customers and strengthen local relationships.

Financially, the bank appears well-positioned to fund its expansion. Last month, JPMorgan reported fourth-quarter profit that exceeded analysts’ expectations, driven in part by strong trading performance amid volatile market conditions. The solid earnings provide additional support for its ambitious investment plans as it continues to pursue growth across consumer and commercial banking segments.

The bank is expected to formally announce further details of its 2026 expansion plans later in the day.
