Japanese authorities have seized a Chinese fishing vessel and arrested its captain for allegedly fleeing inspection within Japan’s exclusive economic zone, in an incident that could further strain already fragile ties between Asia’s two largest economies.
According to Japan’s fisheries agency, the 47-year-old Chinese captain is accused of ignoring orders to halt for an onboard inspection on Thursday in waters off southwestern Nagasaki Prefecture. Officials said the vessel attempted to evade authorities before being intercepted. Ten additional crew members were on board at the time of the incident.
The seizure marks the first case involving a Chinese fishing vessel since 2022, though Japan has detained boats from South Korea and Taiwan in recent years for alleged violations within its waters. The latest confrontation unfolds amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Japan and China over territorial disputes and regional security concerns.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said Friday that Japan would continue to enforce maritime laws strictly. “We will continue to take resolute action in our enforcement activities to prevent and deter illegal fishing operations by foreign vessels,” he told reporters at a regular news conference.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the captain has admitted to the allegations. The fisheries agency said the case will be handled in accordance with Japanese law.
China’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Past maritime incidents between the two nations have drawn diplomatic protests, raising the possibility that this latest episode could prompt renewed exchanges between Tokyo and Beijing as both sides seek to manage an already delicate relationship.
