Shares of State Bank of India climbed sharply on Monday, jumping 6% to a record high after the country’s largest lender delivered a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit and reported industry-leading growth in net interest income. The upbeat results reinforced investor confidence in the bank’s earnings strength and balance sheet resilience, triggering broad-based buying in the stock.

SBI shares traded as high as 1,130 rupees, marking their highest level on record and putting the stock on track for its best single-day performance since June 2024. The rally reflected optimism that the bank is well positioned to benefit from robust loan growth, stable asset quality and improving margins despite a challenging interest rate environment.

The stock was the top performer on both the benchmark Nifty 50 index and the banking sector index, which rose 0.5% and 0.9% respectively. The strong move in SBI also helped lift overall sentiment across financial stocks, underlining the lender’s heavyweight influence on India’s equity market.

Investors welcomed signs that SBI continues to outperform peers on core metrics, particularly net interest income, which remains a key driver of profitability for banks. Analysts noted that steady credit demand, disciplined cost management and a diversified loan book have supported earnings momentum, even as competition in the banking sector intensifies.

The results have strengthened expectations that SBI can sustain solid returns going forward, supported by its dominant market position, improving asset quality and scale advantages. With shares now at record levels, market participants will be watching closely to see whether earnings growth and margin stability can justify further upside in the months ahead.
