For 10 years, Gabbi Fernandez carried a secret in her heart that felt almost too heavy to hold. It was a 12-word message , scrawled in the shaky, determined hand of a father fighting for his last breaths — a message that began as a source of deep childhood anguish but has now blossomed into a viral symbol of undying love.
The Night the World Went Quiet
The tragedy began on an ordinary evening that should have ended with a simple "goodnight." "One night he came home from having dinner with some of his friends and told my mom he was having some difficulty breathing, so she forced him to go to the hospital,” Gabbi shared with Newsweek. Her father, Terry Donohue, was soon diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a condition that caused a rapid and terrifying build-up of fluid in his lungs.
In the sterile, high-pressure halls of the ICU, even the medical staff were shaken by the speed of his decline. “The doctor told my mom he was the youngest person in the ICU and somehow the sickest,” Gabbi recalled.
A Father’s Final Sacrifice
As Terry’s lungs failed, he was intubated to assist with his breathing, leaving him unable to speak. A cold, clinical whiteboard became his only remaining voice. Even in his weakest moments, Terry remained a protector; he arranged for 17-year-old Gabbi to stay with relatives in N.Y. because he couldn't bear the thought of her seeing him in such a vulnerable state.

“It was the night before he was going to be put into a coma,” Gabbi told Newsweek. Summoning every ounce of strength he had left, Terry grabbed his whiteboard to leave one final, private communication for his daughter. He scrawled the words that would anchor her through the coming decade:
"Seeing you was the best thing in the world, don't tell mom."
It was the last time Gabbi would see her father awake. Terry Donohue passed away on July 11, 2016, just two weeks before Gabbi was set to begin her senior year of high school.

The Transformation of a Secret
For a long time, those 12 words were a source of "anguish and upset" for Gabbi. The weight of the secret was so immense that she found it difficult to even talk about her father to anyone, including her own mother. She adored her dad, but the trauma of his loss felt locked away behind that final message.
However, life had one more miracle in store for her perspective. When Gabbi became a mother herself, the "heartbreaking" meaning of that note began to transform into something restorative. "Looking back on it now, it makes me feel cherished and loved," she told Newsweek. "It's something I understood when I was younger obviously, but it's different now that I have a child of my own."
A Blessing Shared with the World
Deciding to finally step out of the silence, Gabbi shared the message on TikTok, a move that has brought an unexpected sense of peace to her family. Even her mother has embraced the revelation of the "secret" note. “She feels like this is kind of a blessing from him in some way, and it makes her happy that I can talk more openly and share things about him now,” Gabbi said.
Gabbi’s journey is a poignant reminder that love never truly leaves us; it simply waits for us to be ready to embrace it again. "Show the people you love how much you truly love them so there's no regrets," she urged. "Grief can be hard, but grief is just leftover love with nowhere to go — yet."
