The National Football League will reveal its most prestigious individual honors Thursday night when the league stages its annual awards ceremony in San Francisco, only days before Super Bowl 60 kicks off. The event will spotlight the season’s standout players and coaches, highlighted by the announcement of the league’s Most Valuable Player along with seven other major accolades.
San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey enters the night in rare company, becoming just the second player ever to be a finalist for three major league awards in the same season. He is one of five candidates for MVP, joining Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, Jacksonville Jaguars signal-caller Trevor Lawrence, New England Patriots rookie sensation Drake Maye and Los Angeles Rams veteran Matthew Stafford.
Maye, who is set to lead New England into the Super Bowl matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, is also a finalist for Offensive Player of the Year alongside McCaffrey, whose versatile production powered one of the league’s most dynamic offenses. McCaffrey and Lawrence are also in contention for Comeback Player of the Year, recognizing players who returned to top form after injury or adversity.
Voting for the awards was conducted by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league, with ballots submitted before the postseason began to preserve the focus on regular-season performance. An independent accounting firm, Lutz and Carr, oversaw the tabulation process.
Each voter ranked their top five choices in eight award categories. First-place selections were awarded 10 points, while second through fifth earned five, three, two and one point respectively, creating a weighted system designed to reward both dominance and consistency across ballots.
In addition to the MVP honor, the ceremony will feature the presentation of Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year. Together, the awards provide a comprehensive snapshot of the individuals who shaped the season on the field and the sidelines.
With the Super Bowl looming and several finalists preparing to take center stage again on Sunday, Thursday night’s ceremony is set to serve as both a celebration of the regular season and a dramatic prelude to the league’s championship showcase.
