A growing number of highly organized and well-funded activist groups are being accused of deliberately steering anti-ICE protesters into volatile and dangerous confrontations with federal immigration agents not only to provoke chaos on the streets, but to exploit the resulting incidents for political propaganda, increased influence, and expanded funding.
One such organization operating in Minneapolis calls itself Defend the 612, a name derived from a local area code.
According to an in-depth report by City Journal, the group has developed a playbook that relies on escalation, confrontation, and, ultimately, human casualties to fuel its agenda.
“This cycle reveals the core strategy of Defend the 612’s leadership,” City Journal reports. “They use casualties as a catalyst for further escalation.
Organizers continue to push volunteers into unpredictable scenes, ensuring ongoing confrontations between residents and federal agents, while the professional architects of the chaos remain shielded from the consequences.”
Publicly, Defend the 612 claims its mission is to “protect” Minneapolis neighborhoods from federal immigration enforcement.
The group frames its actions as community defense and mutual aid. Critics, however, argue that the organization openly defends illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes including murder, rape, drug trafficking, and gang violence while portraying such support as an “act of love and caring.”
In its own rhetoric, the group describes federal immigration officers in extreme and inflammatory terms. “Minneapolis will not accept federal occupation and we will not accept the violent invasion by immoral storm-troopers who have been given orders to terrorize our community and riot in our streets,” the group proclaims in online statements.
“Masked agents try to kidnap our babies and tear families apart again and again, but the 612 is completely clear and united: We want ICE OUT of our home, and there is nothing that will ever stop us from boldly and openly taking care of each other.”
According to City Journal, this so-called “taking care of each other” often translates into training volunteers referred to as “ICE watchers” to deliberately insert themselves into active law-enforcement operations.
These volunteers are encouraged to engage in increasingly risky and confrontational behavior with both local police and federal agents, raising the likelihood of physical altercations and serious injuries.
Training materials reviewed by investigators reportedly instruct activists that their mission is to interfere with immigration enforcement by “confusing them, slowing them down so they can’t take more people,” and doing so “so well that they never want to come back.”
The stated goal is to make immigration enforcement “uncomfortable and inefficient,” even if it means violating lawful orders or escalating tensions on the ground.
Activists are also trained to refuse compliance with law enforcement, a tactic that critics say places them and officers at significant risk. In some cases, participants are explicitly encouraged to stand in the path of officers, obstruct arrests, or intentionally get themselves arrested.
The strategy, according to critics, is to divert law-enforcement resources away from apprehending criminal illegal aliens and toward managing protest-related disruptions.
Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow has previously reported that groups like Defend the 612 are not operating in isolation. In an October report, Marlow highlighted the role of wealthy foreign-connected donors, including George Soros and Neville Roy Singham, in funding networks of radical left-wing activist organizations across the United States.
Further scrutiny has come from the Government Accountability Institute (GAI). Seamus Bruner, GAI’s Director of Research, and GAI President Peter Schweizer have alleged that Singham is linked to dozens of radical left-wing organizations and has played a role in financing domestic extremist activity within the U.S.
Critics argue that the most disturbing aspect of these movements is their apparent indifference to the safety of their own followers. Field operatives are encouraged to place themselves directly in harm’s way, even as organizers and strategists remain insulated from legal and physical consequences.
These tactics, critics say, have already had tragic results. Two individuals, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were killed after being drawn into confrontations that placed them directly in the line of fire. According to critics, such outcomes are not viewed as setbacks by the groups involved, but as opportunities.
Investigators and analysts allege that injuries and deaths are used to fuel outrage campaigns, raise additional funds, recruit new activists, and justify escalating levels of confrontation and violence.
In this view, casualties are not an unfortunate byproduct of the strategy they are an integral part of it.
As tensions surrounding immigration enforcement continue to rise nationwide, critics warn that these highly organized activist networks are playing an increasingly dangerous game one that risks more violence, more loss of life, and deeper divisions, while those directing the chaos remain safely behind the scenes.
