Two newly released national polls indicate that a majority of Americans support deporting criminal illegal immigrants and want state and local governments to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as federal authorities enforce immigration laws.
The first survey found widespread agreement on core immigration enforcement questions. According to the poll results, 73 percent of respondents said entering the United States without permission is breaking the law. Sixty-one percent said they support deporting illegal immigrants to their home countries, while 54 percent said they support ICE enforcing federal immigration laws. The same poll found that 58 percent oppose calls to defund ICE, a position that has been advocated by some Democratic lawmakers and activists, as outlined in related party statements and policy positions.
A second survey showed similarly strong support for enforcement actions, particularly when focused on individuals with criminal records. In that poll, a solid majority said they approved of President Donald Trump’s response to recent anti-ICE riots in Minneapolis. Seventy-three percent said criminal illegal immigrants should be deported, with more than half saying deportation should extend to all illegal immigrants without lawful status.
The same survey found that 67 percent want state and local officials to cooperate with federal authorities to deport criminal illegal immigrants, including 64 percent of independents. Another 67 percent said local jails should transfer criminal illegal immigrants to federal custody for deportation, a position supported by 62 percent of independents and 50 percent of Democrats.
Respondents also expressed views on political messaging around immigration enforcement. Sixty percent said they believe Democrats are encouraging resistance to ICE officers, while 57 percent said they oppose elected officials urging defiance against federal immigration authorities.
Together, the polling data suggest consistent public support for deporting criminal illegal immigrants and for cooperation between local governments and federal immigration agencies, even as political debates over enforcement tactics and funding continue.
