The National Institutes of Health on Tuesday opened a permanent research office in East Palestine, Ohio, to study the long-term health effects of the 2023 train derailment that released toxic chemicals into the surrounding community, according to a federal announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services.
The new East Palestine Train Derailment Health Research Program Office will serve as the central hub for a five-year, $10 million research initiative funded by NIH. Federal officials said the program is designed to coordinate studies, engage directly with residents, and enroll affected individuals in federally supported health research.
The derailment occurred three years ago when a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying vinyl chloride derailed after a wheel bearing overheated and ignited, forcing 38 cars off the tracks. Eleven of those cars were transporting the hazardous chemical, triggering a large-scale environmental incident that disrupted life for thousands of residents in and around East Palestine.
“NIH’s research hub offers the people of East Palestine a pathway to clear answers about their health they deserve,” said Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a statement. He said those affected by the derailment should have access to independent scientific research focused on their well-being.
NIH officials said experts working through the new office will collaborate with the community, support long-term monitoring efforts, and help residents participate in health studies aimed at identifying potential links between chemical exposure and reported symptoms.
Following the derailment, residents reported headaches, respiratory problems, and skin and eye irritation. State officials responded by opening a health clinic in East Palestine through the Ohio Department of Health to provide care and monitoring for those impacted.
Federal health officials said the newly opened NIH office is intended to complement those earlier efforts by providing sustained, long-term research focused on potential health outcomes linked to the derailment.
