President Donald Trump said Monday that a triumphal arch he plans to build at the entrance to Washington, D.C., will surpass comparable monuments around the world, casting the proposed structure as a defining symbol of his architectural vision for the nation’s capital.
“India’s beautiful Triumphal Arch,” Trump wrote in a social media post, which included an image of an arch in India. “Ours will be the greatest of them all!”
Trump has previously outlined plans for a grand arch at one of the main gateways into Washington, a project he has promoted as both an aesthetic and symbolic statement. The proposed monument has informally become known as the “Arc de Trump,” a nickname that references the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
The former president first publicly detailed the concept in an earlier announcement outlining the scope and ambition of the project, according to a prior report.
“It’s going to be really beautiful. I think it’s going to be fantastic. There’s a rendering of what it will look like. You have three sizes,” Trump said in October. “Whichever one would look good. I happen to think the large one.”
During his first term, Trump signed an executive order directing that new federal buildings emphasize traditional architectural styles, part of a broader effort to reshape the visual character of Washington, D.C. The proposed triumphal arch aligns with that initiative, which sought to move away from modernist designs in favor of classical forms associated with historic national monuments.
