Newly released video footage has emerged showing Alex Pretti involved in a tense confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on January 13 just 11 days before he was fatally shot in an encounter involving Border Patrol agents.

The existence and authenticity of the video were confirmed by a spokesperson for Pretti’s family as well as the family’s attorney, according to reporting by the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was captured on bystander video amid a chaotic scene in south Minneapolis, where a group of observers could be seen blowing whistles and shouting as an unmarked convoy of federal immigration vehicles moved into the area.

The footage shows a man identified as Pretti yelling at immigration agents during the confrontation. Both the family’s spokesperson and their attorney verified to the Star Tribune that the individual in the video is indeed Alex Pretti.

According to the newspaper’s account, the January 13 video depicts Pretti surrounded by officers during what appeared to be a federal immigration operation at a street corner.

The scene unfolded in front of a crowd of onlookers, some of whom recorded the incident on their phones. In the footage, Pretti can be heard cursing at agents as tensions escalated and officers moved in close proximity to him.

The video was originally captured by The News Movement on January 13 and later aired by the BBC, Mediaite reported. In a post on X, The News Movement stated that the clip “appears to be Alex Pretti interacting with federal immigration agents” and added that it had been reviewed by the BBC.

According to the outlet, the BBC used facial recognition technology to analyze the footage, confirming Pretti’s identity with a reported 97 percent degree of accuracy.

The BBC publicly confirmed the authenticity of the video during its 10 p.m. GMT news broadcast. Correspondent Ros Atkins explained that the man shown in the footage “has the same coat, facial hair, and gait as Alex Pretti,” and that a facial recognition tool indicated a 97 percent match. Atkins also noted that the footage shows the man shouting abuse at federal agents.

A separate spokesperson for the BBC later confirmed to Mediaite that the network had reviewed the footage and that its team did, in fact, use facial recognition technology as part of the verification process.

In the BBC segment, Atkins referred to the clip as “new footage shared with the BBC by The News Movement,” which he said appears to show Pretti and other protesters confronting federal agents in the days following the death of Renee Good. Atkins emphasized that it remains unclear exactly what federal agents were doing at the time of the January 13 encounter.

Describing the video in detail, Atkins said it appears to show Pretti shouting at the agents, making a motion as if to spit, and kicking a vehicle. At one point, Pretti is wrestled to the ground by officers.

As he gets back up, Atkins noted, a gun can be seen tucked into his waistband. Shortly afterward, Pretti is released by officers. “Eleven days later,” Atkins added, “the killing of Alex Pretti would be seen across the world.”

Following the circulation of the video, Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin reported on X that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed it is aware of the footage and that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is actively investigating the January 13 incident.

Over the weekend, DHS released a statement addressing the fatal shooting that occurred days later. According to DHS, agents in Minneapolis had been conducting what they described as a “targeted operation” aimed at a criminal illegal alien when Pretti allegedly approached Border Patrol officers while carrying a 9mm semiautomatic handgun.

The newly surfaced video has added further scrutiny to the events leading up to Pretti’s death, as investigators continue to examine both encounters and the circumstances surrounding them.
