President Donald Trump said Tuesday that a “big investigation” is underway into the killing of Minneapolis protester and intensive care nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents, emphasizing that he intends to personally monitor the process and insisting the inquiry be conducted with integrity.

“I want to see the investigation. I’m going to be watching over it, and I want a very honorable and honest investigation. I have to see it myself,” Trump said as he departed the White House.

Asked about Pretti’s family, the president expressed sympathy, saying, “I love everybody. I love all of our people. I love his family. And it’s a very sad situation.”

Trump was also questioned as he left the White House for a trip to Iowa about whether Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would step down amid the controversy surrounding the incident. He responded with a single word: “No.” He offered no additional comment.

The president’s remarks followed a shift in tone from the White House after earlier statements by senior administration officials described Pretti as a domestic terrorist, claims that were later challenged by video footage of the encounter. On Monday, White House officials sought to distance Trump from those characterizations.

Federal immigration agents remained active across the Twin Cities region on Tuesday, though it was unclear whether enforcement tactics had changed following the administration’s revised messaging.

During the exchange with reporters, Trump was asked directly whether the killed Minneapolis protester was an “assassin,” a claim previously made by a key aide. The president answered, “No.”

Trump added, however, that protesters “can’t have guns,” noting that Pretti was armed, and described the incident as “just a very unfortunate incident.”
