President Donald Trump sharply criticized former Special Counsel Jack Smith on Thursday, declaring that Smith was being “decimated” during his testimony before Congress as lawmakers pressed him over his role in high-profile investigations targeting Trump during the previous presidential campaign.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump launched a blistering attack on Smith, who led both the classified documents prosecution and the January 6 Capitol riot investigation against then-candidate Trump.

The president portrayed Smith’s appearance before lawmakers as a public unraveling of what he has long described as politically motivated prosecutions.

“Deranged Jack Smith is being DECIMATED before Congress,” Trump wrote. “It was over when they discussed his past failures and unfair prosecutions. He destroyed many lives under the guise of legitimacy.”

Trump escalated his rhetoric further, questioning Smith’s fitness to practice law and accusing the justice system of applying a double standard based on political affiliation.

“Jack Smith is a deranged animal, who shouldn’t be allowed to practice Law,” Trump continued. “If he were a Republican, his license would be taken away from him, and far worse!”

The president also expressed hope that Attorney General Pam Bondi is closely reviewing Smith’s conduct, signaling that accountability may be forthcoming.

“Hopefully the Attorney General is looking at what he’s done, including some of the crooked and corrupt witnesses that he was attempting to use in his case against me,” Trump wrote. “The whole thing was a Democrat SCAM — a big price should be paid by them for what they have put our Country through!”

Tensions boiled over during the House Judiciary Committee hearing when Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) directly confronted Smith in a pointed and combative exchange. Issa accused Smith of acting as a political weapon for then-President Joe Biden and pursuing investigations that targeted Biden’s political opponents.

Issa questioned whether Smith had violated constitutional principles and the separation of powers by allegedly obtaining information related to members of Congress without proper disclosure.

“You didn’t see any selective nature or any separation of powers under the Constitution to spying on the activities and the conversations of the Speaker of the House?” Issa asked.

He went on to argue that communications involving the Speaker second in line to the presidency and the president himself would only be of interest if Smith had presumed a conspiracy without sufficient evidence.

“You, like the President’s Men for Richard Nixon, went after your political enemies,” Issa charged. “Maybe they’re not your political enemies, but they sure as hell were Joe Biden’s political enemies. They were Kamala Harris’s political enemies. They were the enemies of the president, and you were their arm, weren’t you?”

Smith responded tersely, denying the accusation: “No.”

Issa pressed further, accusing Smith of secretly gathering information on lawmakers while preventing them from discovering it through gag orders.

“So you spied on the Speaker of the House and these other senators and informed no one,” Issa said. “If they were not subjects of a conspiracy investigation, why was Congress a separate branch that you, under the Constitution, have to respect not informed? Did you tell the judge that you were seeking records related to conversations between the Speaker of the House and the president, or did you withhold that information?”

Smith pushed back, insisting that his office acted within the law. “My office didn’t spy on anyone,” he said.

The heated questioning ended only after a sharp procedural clash between Issa and House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), bringing the exchange to an abrupt close.

The hearing, however, did little to quiet controversy. Instead, it intensified debate over the politicization of the Justice Department, the scope of prosecutorial power, and whether Smith’s investigations crossed constitutional and ethical lines.

For Trump and his allies, Smith’s testimony reinforced their long-standing claim that the former special counsel was less an independent prosecutor and more a political instrument wielded against the president and his supporters.
