The UN Human Rights Council has called to hold an emergency meeting this week about the “deteriorating human rights situation in Iran.”

Pascal Sim, the council spokesperson, told reporters that this meeting will take place on Friday at the request of the UK, Germany, Iceland, Moldova, and North Macedonia, Iran Freedom Live updated.

These five countries pointed out in a letter to the President of the UN Human Rights Council, which AFP has seen a copy of, the “credible reports concerning violence, repression of protesters, and violations of international human rights law across” Iran.

According to the report a third of the council members have supported the request from the countries about the emergency meeting.

UN recently said, the members are “horrified by the mounting violence against protesters, as reports indicate hundreds have been killed & thousands arrested.”

“Authorities must immediately halt all forms of violence & repression, & restore full access to internet & telecommunications,” said the UN.

Another statement came saying that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) stated that in 2025, the regime executed at least 1500 people, using killings “as a tool of State intimidation.”

UN Watch, the Geneva-based non-governmental human rights organization,  welcomed the expected special session of the UN Human Rights Council on the Iranian regime’s mass killings of protesters, but also strongly criticized the decision to delay the session until Friday, January 23.
