At least two people were killed and dozens more injured during a large-scale Russian drone attack across Ukraine overnight, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday, as Ukrainian and U.S. officials continued discussions on post-war security and reconstruction.
According to Zelenskyy, Russian forces launched more than 200 drones in coordinated strikes that targeted the Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi and Odesa regions. Ukraine’s military said it recorded 30 separate strikes across 15 locations.
One of the fatalities occurred in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest urban center, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. Terekhov said recent Russian attacks had already caused significant damage to local energy facilities. Authorities did not immediately disclose the location of the second death.
The attack came as Russia intensified its winter campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, targeting power generation and distribution facilities as freezing temperatures gripped much of the country. Major cities, including the capital Kyiv, have experienced rolling blackouts and reduced heating supplies, with temperatures reported as low as minus 16 degrees Celsius.
Zelenskyy said Saturday that he had ordered the acceleration of electricity imports and the delivery of additional power equipment to stabilize the grid and mitigate further outages.
The latest drone assault occurred as U.S. and Ukrainian delegations met in Miami to discuss security guarantees and a post-war recovery framework for Ukraine. The talks are part of broader diplomatic efforts by Washington to encourage Kyiv to outline a peace proposal that could later be presented to Moscow.
Russia has remained publicly skeptical of the diplomatic initiative and has continued to demand significant concessions from Ukraine, even as fighting persists on multiple fronts nearly four years into the war.
Ukrainian officials said emergency crews were deployed overnight to assess damage, restore power where possible and assist civilians affected by the strikes, while air defense systems remained on heightened alert amid ongoing threats of further attacks.
