A U.S. startup says it intends to open what it describes as the first hotel on the Moon within six years, offering multimillion-dollar stays as commercial activity in space expands.

A California-based startup says it is planning to build and operate a hotel on the Moon by 2032, positioning the project as part of a broader push toward sustained human presence beyond Earth during the second year of President Donald J. Trump’s second term.

The company, Galactic Resource Utilization Space, or GRU Space, says the proposed lunar resort would be capable of hosting paying guests for multi-night stays and would support longer-term ambitions for human settlement on the Moon and, eventually, Mars. The announcement comes shortly after NASA and the Department of Energy moved forward with plans to develop and deploy a nuclear power system to support a future permanent lunar base.

According to reporting by the Daily News, GRU Space is already accepting deposits from prospective customers. The outlet reported that the company is asking for deposits of £750,000, or about $1 million, to reserve a five-night stay, with total costs potentially exceeding £7.5 million, or roughly $10 million.

GRU Space founder Skyler Chan, 22, a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, told the outlet he believes the project could play a role in enabling long-term human habitation beyond Earth. “Humanity’s transition to a space-faring species is not a question of if, but when,” Chan said, according to the report. “We live during an inflection point where we can actually become interplanetary before we die. If we succeed, billions of human lives will be born on the Moon and Mars and be able to experience the beauty of lunar and Martian life.”

The proposal has drawn widespread attention online following coverage in British and U.S. media, including posts highlighting the project’s timeline and cost estimates. A front-page preview shared by Metro UK noted the plan for the “first hotel on the moon ‘by 2032’” in a post published on X. Another post circulating on the platform stated that customers can “pay $1 million to reserve a hotel stay on the Moon,” referencing GRU Space’s stated target opening year and proposed activities such as moonwalks and lunar driving, as shared here.

Additional details about the project’s origins and development timeline were outlined in a separate post describing Chan’s efforts as a solo founder and the company’s early milestones, including plans for initial construction beginning in 2029 and a target opening in 2032, as outlined in this post.

Chan acknowledged the technical challenges involved in constructing permanent structures in a low-gravity environment using unfamiliar materials. “As a kid, I always dreamed of going into space,” he said. “But this is a very complex problem to solve. It’s not just like building a bridge. It’s a different gravity environment with different building materials. It’s such a unique, exciting problem to solve, but if we solve it, that means infinite human lives could be born on the Moon and Mars. We’re ushering in a whole new era of life and culture.”

GRU Space has not released detailed engineering specifications or launch agreements for the proposed hotel, and no regulatory approvals or government partnerships have been publicly announced. The company’s timeline places its ambitions alongside a growing number of public and private initiatives aimed at expanding human activity on and around the Moon in the coming decade.
