House Oversight Committee leaders say they are seeking answers after Rep. Ilhan Omar’s latest financial disclosure showed a dramatic rise in her household’s net worth as federal investigators probe a massive Minnesota fraud case.

The House Oversight Committee is reviewing the finances of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., following a newly filed disclosure that lists her household net worth at approximately $30 million, a figure that represents a sharp increase from prior years, according to a report by the New York Post.

Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., told the Post that congressional investigators intend to determine how the wealth was accumulated. “We’re going to get answers, whether it’s through the Ethics Committee or the Oversight Committee, one of the two,” Comer said.

The inquiry comes as federal authorities investigate a broad fraud scheme in Minnesota that prosecutors estimate could exceed $9 billion in losses. Many defendants in the case are of Somali descent. Omar, who has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019, is also of Somali descent, though no charges have been filed against her in connection with the investigation.

Omar’s most recent financial disclosure, filed in May, shows that the combined net worth of Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, increased by roughly 3,500 percent by the end of 2024. Disclosures filed at the end of 2023 indicated that their combined ownership interests totaled just over $51,000.

The majority of the reported wealth is attributed to Mynett’s assets. Omar’s personal assets are listed in a range between $16,000 and $65,000, an increase from earlier disclosures but still a small portion of the household total.

Mynett is listed as the owner of Rose Lake Capital, a firm valued in disclosures between $5 million and $25 million. His winery business, Estcru LLC, is valued between $1 million and $5 million, according to the same filings.

When Omar was first elected to Congress, her financial disclosure showed a negative net worth.

“There are a lot of questions as to how her husband accumulated so much wealth over the past two years,” Comer told the Post. “It’s not possible. It’s not. I’m a money guy. It’s not possible.”

House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., also called for scrutiny. “While Minnesotans have been getting fleeced to the tune of $9 billion by Somali fraudsters, Ilhan Omar and her husband have been raking in millions through their shady businesses,” Emmer said in comments reported by the Post. “The explosion of wealth, plus the fact that convicted fraudsters helped fund Omar’s campaign, is worth an investigation by the Ethics Committee at the very least.”

Omar has previously rejected claims that she is wealthy. Earlier this year, she told Business Insider that allegations about her finances were false. “Since getting elected, there has been a coordinated right-wing disinformation campaign claiming all sorts of wild things, including the ridiculous claim I am worth millions of dollars which is categorically false,” Omar said. “I am not a millionaire.”

A law enforcement source told the Post that investigators are examining any political figures connected to the Minnesota fraud cases. “All politicians connected to any of this [fraud] in Minnesota are being investigated,” the source said, adding, “You can read between the lines.”
