Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said Thursday that she presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House, describing the act as symbolic recognition of his role in global diplomacy.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Machado said she physically handed the Nobel medal to Trump during their conversation. “I presented the president of the United States the medal, the Nobel Peace Prize,” she said, according to remarks reported following the meeting.
Machado, who previously dedicated the award to Trump when it was announced, also referenced a historical parallel during her remarks, recounting how the Marquis de Lafayette once presented Simón Bolívar with a medal bearing the image of George Washington. Bolívar is regarded as a foundational figure in South American history, having played a central role in the independence movements that shaped modern Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador.
The meeting came as Machado continues efforts to secure backing from the Trump administration for a transition of power in Venezuela. In recent months, she has engaged U.S. officials while advocating for democratic change following the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a U.S.-led operation earlier this year.
Trump has long expressed interest in the Nobel Peace Prize and has received multiple nominations over the years tied to diplomatic efforts in various international conflicts. The White House has characterized the meeting with Machado as constructive, though no formal policy announcements were made following their discussion.
Machado’s comments underscored her attempt to align closely with the current administration as Venezuela’s political future remains unsettled.
