A slate of Democratic-led proposals across several states seeks to curtail cooperation with federal immigration agents, even as the Trump administration points to recent arrests of violent criminal aliens.

Democratic lawmakers in multiple states are advancing legislation aimed at restricting the operations of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, following a fatal confrontation in Minneapolis that left an ICE agent shooting a woman authorities say attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon against officers.
The incident has been cited by progressive activists and lawmakers as justification for a renewed push to limit federal immigration enforcement. According to reporting by Fox News, Democrats in New York, Oregon, New Jersey, California, Georgia, New Hampshire, and Tennessee are pursuing or preparing legislation designed to obstruct ICE activity within their jurisdictions.
In Oregon, Democratic legislators are drafting a proposal that would allow residents to sue federal immigration agents for alleged violations of Fourth Amendment protections against unlawful searches and seizures. In New Jersey, a trio of bills awaiting action from Gov. Phil Murphy would formally establish the state as a sanctuary jurisdiction, limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
The Trump administration has warned that such non-cooperation policies make immigration enforcement more dangerous and undermine public safety by preventing coordination between local and federal law enforcement.
At the national level, progressive Democrats are signaling they may attempt to use the looming end-of-January government funding deadline to force restrictions on ICE operations. As reported by Breitbart News, some lawmakers have openly discussed leveraging the threat of a government shutdown to defund the agency.
Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan has said he plans to introduce legislation to abolish ICE entirely, accusing the agency of operating beyond acceptable bounds.
ICE officials and supporters counter that recent enforcement actions underscore the agency’s focus on violent offenders. In recent weeks, ICE arrested an illegal alien gang member previously convicted of kidnapping, torture, and murder in New Mexico. In Minnesota, the agency apprehended multiple criminal aliens convicted of crimes including child rape, homicide, manslaughter, strangulation, and driving under the influence, according to reporting shared by Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin in a public post.
Similar arrests have taken place in California, where ICE detained illegal aliens with prior convictions for sex offenses and drunk driving, according to Breitbart News.
The debate has exposed divisions within the Democratic Party. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania recently broke with progressive colleagues by urging ICE to “round up all” criminal illegal aliens and deport them.
As state legislatures move forward with proposed restrictions and federal officials defend expanded enforcement, the clash reflects a broader national struggle over immigration policy, public safety, and the limits of state resistance to federal law.
