President accuses Democratic officials of exploiting violence for political ends while federal immigration operations expand in Minneapolis.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned that Minnesota officials would face a “DAY OF RECKONING & RETRIBUTION,” accusing Democratic leaders of exploiting recent unrest following the fatal shooting of a woman during a federal immigration operation.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump questioned whether Minnesotans want to live in what he described as communities plagued by violent criminals and blamed state leadership for failing to protect public safety. He urged residents not to fear and said accountability was coming, though he did not specify what actions his administration would take.
The remarks came after days of protests and riots in Minneapolis following the shooting death of Renee Good during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation. Federal officials said Good used her SUV to threaten an ICE agent, prompting the agent to fire in self-defense. Video footage released by authorities appears to show the vehicle moving toward the agent moments before shots were fired.
White House officials have defended the agent’s actions, while local Democratic leaders have accused federal authorities of escalating tensions. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz responded to Trump’s comments by accusing the president of political retribution, claiming the administration was punishing the state for past election results. Walz made the remarks in a social media post reacting to Trump’s warning.
Minnesota and Illinois filed suit this week seeking to block a surge of federal immigration-enforcement officers into their states. The lawsuit names Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other federal officials and argues that the deployment exceeds federal authority.
The Department of Homeland Security has pushed back, accusing Minnesota officials of obstructing immigration enforcement. DHS has said state leaders prioritized politics over public safety after the Justice Department placed Minnesota on a list of jurisdictions it says impede enforcement of federal immigration laws.
In a post on X, Noem accused what she called “corrupt, activist politicians” of refusing to protect Minnesotans and pursuing illegal actions to maintain control. She said the administration would root out fraud, arrest criminal illegal aliens, and hold accountable those who aid or abet criminal activity.
The Trump administration has deployed federal law enforcement officers to several Democratic-led states and cities, saying the operations target illegal immigration and violent crime. Noem said last week that 2,000 federal agents would be sent to Minnesota, with additional officers arriving this week to allow ICE and Border Patrol personnel operating in Minneapolis to do so safely amid ongoing unrest.
