President Donald Trump warned that a Supreme Court decision striking down his tariff authority could force the United States to repay hundreds of billions — or even trillions — of dollars tied to tariff collections and related investments.

President Donald Trump on Monday warned that the United States could face massive financial liabilities if the Supreme Court rules against his administration’s authority to impose tariffs, saying the costs could reach into the trillions of dollars.

The warning comes as the Supreme Court of the United States weighs a challenge to Trump’s use of emergency powers to levy tariffs. The justices heard oral arguments in the case last year but have not yet issued a ruling. Trump imposed the so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, prompting legal challenges over whether the statute grants the president such sweeping authority. A final decision is expected in the near future, though no specific timeline has been announced.

“The actual numbers that we would have to pay back if, for any reason, the Supreme Court were to rule against the United States of America on Tariffs, would be many Hundreds of Billions of Dollars,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. He added that those figures would not include additional compensation sought by countries and companies that have already invested heavily in new plants, factories, and equipment to avoid future tariffs.

“When these Investments are added, we are talking about Trillions of Dollars!” Trump continued. “It would be a complete mess, and almost impossible for our Country to pay.”

Trump argued that any suggestion such costs could be resolved quickly would be inaccurate, saying the scale and complexity of potential repayments would take years to assess, including determining who would be paid, when, and how. “Remember, when America shines brightly, the World shines brightly,” he wrote. “In other words, if the Supreme Court rules against the United States of America on this National Security bonanza, WE’RE SCREWED!”

The president’s remarks follow an earlier announcement in January in which he said his administration had already collected — or was on track to collect — roughly $600 billion in tariff revenue since his return to the White House. Trump has repeatedly framed the tariffs as a national security measure and a cornerstone of his economic strategy, arguing they protect U.S. industries while pressuring foreign governments and corporations to invest domestically.

The Supreme Court’s eventual ruling is expected to carry significant implications for presidential trade authority, emergency powers, and the future of U.S. tariff policy.
