President Donald Trump announced a sweeping new economic and energy agreement with Venezuela on Wednesday, asserting that Caracas will use the revenue from a recently negotiated oil deal to buy only American-made products.
The president made the declaration in a post on his Truth Social platform, laying out what he described as a transformational partnership between the United States and Venezuela.
In his message, Trump said he had been informed that under the terms of the new oil arrangement, Venezuela will direct all proceeds toward purchasing goods manufactured in the United States.
These purchases, he wrote, will include a wide range of American agricultural products, medicines, medical devices, and equipment, including technology and hardware aimed at improving Venezuela’s electric grid and energy infrastructure. Trump framed these commitments as a strategic decision by Venezuela to make the United States its principal economic partner—a choice he called “wise” and beneficial both for Venezuelans and Americans.
The president also emphasized that this deal will connect U.S. industry and labor directly to Venezuela’s economic recovery, and he thanked the American public for their attention to the matter.
U.S. Control of Venezuelan Oil Sales “Indefinitely”
Trump’s announcement comes amid parallel developments in Washington, where Energy Secretary Chris Wright revealed that the United States government will take control of Venezuelan oil sales on an ongoing basis.
Speaking at an energy conference, Wright confirmed that the administration plans to market Venezuelan crude “indefinitely,” beginning with oil currently in storage and proceeding into the future with newly produced crude. The U.S. intends to sell this oil both domestically through American refineries and internationally.
Under the arrangement, revenue from these oil sales will be deposited into accounts controlled by the U.S. government, giving Washington leverage over how the funds are used. Officials say the goal is to ensure that proceeds benefit both Venezuelans and Americans, while also creating leverage to influence long-term political and economic reforms in Venezuela.
Broader Context and Outlook
The renewed focus on Venezuelan oil comes against a backdrop of dramatic geopolitical shifts. Following recent upheavals in Venezuelan leadership and broader U.S. policy changes toward Caracas, the Trump administration has moved to roll back select sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector to allow crude exports that had previously been blocked.
Wright and other administration officials are also engaging with major U.S. oil companies about investment opportunities to help stabilize and eventually expand Venezuela’s depleted oil production infrastructure.
Together, these announcements represent one of the most aggressive U.S. initiatives in Venezuela in decades—aimed at leveraging that country’s vast energy resources for economic and strategic benefits, while also strengthening economic ties through American exports and industrial engagement.
