President Donald Trump on Wednesday addressed the fatal shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis, stating that available evidence indicates the agent acted in self-defense and accusing the “radical left” of fueling hostility toward federal law enforcement.

The incident occurred during an ICE operation when a woman allegedly drove her vehicle toward an ICE agent in the street. The agent fired his weapon to stop the threat, resulting in the woman’s death.

The Department of Homeland Security detailed the encounter in a statement posted on social media, saying ICE officers were carrying out targeted operations when rioters attempted to block them and one individual “weaponized her vehicle,” trying to run over officers. DHS said the agent, fearing for his life and the safety of others, fired defensive shots and described the attack as an act of domestic terrorism.

Trump responded in a post on Truth Social, saying the shooting appeared to be “in self-defense” based on video of the incident. He wrote that the ICE agent involved had been attacked so violently that “it is hard to believe he is alive,” noting that the agent is now recovering in the hospital.

In the same statement, Trump argued that such incidents are the result of sustained attacks on law enforcement, writing that the “Radical Left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents on a daily basis.” He added that ICE agents are “just trying to do the job of MAKING AMERICA SAFE” and called on Americans to stand behind federal officers amid what he described as a growing climate of violence and intimidation.

The shooting prompted sharp reactions from Democratic officials. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey initially responded with a social media post accusing ICE of “causing chaos” in the city and demanding the agency leave immediately, according to Breitbart. He later held a press conference in which he reiterated that demand using profanity.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., weighed in by posting a call to abolish ICE entirely.
