Recent political changes are set and bound by past resolutions and jurisdictions that have been acquired and enforced. Therefore, the outcomes are vague and more likely to result in severe consequences that are heavily dependent on the economic and political will of the administrations. Thus, uncertainty in every political decision and change is the swift departure of a significant part that once solidified the power bases of the system. But due to political management of power and authority that are heavily influenced by sovereignty, the system lacks its ability to influence and change.
Modern Colonialism is a term and an ideology that academics have always talked about in conferences, mentioned in books, and lectured about in classes. It’s a deep sense of history that is being brought out to life the moment reality hits and academic doctrines are commenced.
There had been a time when modern colonialism was sene to be a far more complex concept to be understood and lived, it was understood mainly through books and lectures for the sake of education, and not preparation. But modern politics has become the norm and answer for every generational doubt in regards to past ideologies.
In historical terms of political power and sensibility, the norm of give and take is based on beneficiary and cruelty, something that leaves an area with one winner only. A victor that gets everything, leaving behind the backlash of events that can’t be tormented easily. And history is repeating itself again, but through a wider visual that is highly motivated by the power of virtue. With states gaining their independence and sovereignty, questions are being raised on why would foreign countries want and seek more when they’ve got it all?.
And the answer lies with a simple word, and it’s “power”. Power means authority, and authority means sovereignty. But the slight difference in modern colonialism lies within the indirect control of the state. Back in the day, forces and armies faced one another, now, the process is seen to be swift and indirect that some might not even realize it, and acknowledge its presence. The aforesaid is applied through the three major phases and they are 1. Economic, 2. Cultural, 3. Political.
The three phases are connected and interlinked through the foundational principles of politics and the social system that a country is founded upon. Each is independently foreign from the other, but when connected, they form a sequence of events and steps towards a state’s identity and development. The economic aspect is the moving force in every state, it’s the fuel that runs the country towards more diplomacy and more economic growth. However, when a state is fragile and in a situation where dependency on foreign and neighboring countries is their one and only solution, then administrators are in a state of calculating the probabilities of how long will this effect take, and what kind of favors will they be asked to give in return.
This leaves the governments with failing economies to heavily rely on foreign financial assistance in order to carry on with their economic plans and development. Yet, the longer the dependency on foreign countries takes, the longer and heavier the costs would be. Foreign assistance slithers and open doors of full power and control over a government’s resources and economic output. Which leads to a whole new chapter of dependency that is based on survival. Despite the knowledge of the control and economic sophistication that the aiding government is having, the affected government has no say in the decisions as their economy will fail and get in a worse shape than it used to be. Which is why the longevity of foreign presence is a probability that shall be considered at all times due to its importance and relative outcomes of foreign policy and dependency.
As economic colonialism sets into place without hesitation and realization of the outcomes and consequences, the cultural aspect slithers in slowly too, In spite of what culture means to some countries and how they are viewed, every state holds pride in what they have and what they are. But, when the theme of modernization has been set in motion and executed through economic policies first, the cultural aspect is dragged in through ease and simplicity. All under the guise of “modernization”
From schools and the turnover of languages used, all the way to behavioral and cultural development that is based on etiquette, cultural changes tend to be severe and consequential that it leaves no time and space to develop an algorithm to determine the future of the state’s identity and nationalism. With the cultural reformation and economic control and influence, the political system of the state tends to be an open area for change. And that’s not an issue, for the major control has been set through the economic and cultural changes, which is why political control is a matter of principle and not a necessity in this case.
With economic and cultural shifts, the affected state would sense a transition in the country’s development that goes beyond the traditional norms of the system. And that leaves the door for political changes widely opened, despite of the domestic society being against or in favor of a political party and the major dependency from foreign countries, the change will be blindly accepted due to moral reasons that goes beyond the basic principles of human dignity, and that’s the survival of a nation.
Without foreign assistance affected states wouldn’t have survived economically, which opened all the closed doors that linked them to the international system and global markets. And through the cultural shift, diplomacy has been enacted and fueled by the ideas of modernization and globalization. Which leaves the political system the only matter that requires a few alterations. And with that, regardless of political oppositions, changes will be demanded and executed immediately, leaving the public with no other option other than to submit and accept the outcomes that had to be thought of in the first place.
Examples about the three phases of modern colonialism vary, especially now with the global political escalation that is happening in Venezuela, Russia and Europe. One can see how the tripartite are linked together, it’s not a matter of weeks and months. Modern colonialism is a set of historical events that have been linked and influenced by the fuel of “more”. More power, more authority, and more lands.
