President Donald Trump told House Republicans on Tuesday that his party is positioned to defy the traditional midterm backlash against the sitting president and deliver what he called an “epic” victory in the 2026 elections, citing what he described as unprecedented success during his first year back in office.

Speaking at the GOP House retreat at the Trump-Kennedy Center, Trump praised the administration’s record in 2025 and said Republicans are poised to expand on that momentum. “So together, we had 12 months of unprecedented success in 2025,” Trump said. “And now we’re going to make history and break records with the epic midterm victory that we’re going to pull off.”

Trump described the past year as an “amazing” presidency and argued that his administration has achieved results unmatched by previous governments. He said it has long been an “amazing phenomenon” that presidents often see their parties lose seats in midterm elections even when the administration is performing well, but insisted Republicans would break that pattern.

“It just doesn’t seem to happen for people that win the presidency,” Trump said. “We sure as hell are having a successful presidency. But even if it’s a successful presidency, there’s been nothing like what we’re doing.”

Trump emphasized the importance of maintaining Republican control of the House, warning that Democrats would pursue impeachment if they regain the majority. “They’ll find a reason to impeach me,” he said. “I’ll get impeached.”

He contrasted Republican restraint with what he described as Democratic aggression. “We don’t impeach them. You know why? Because they’re meaner than we are,” Trump said, adding, “We should have impeached Joe Biden for 100 different things.”

Trump described Democrats as politically tough but vulnerable due to their policy positions. “They are mean and smart,” he said. “But fortunately for you, they have horrible policy.”

Pointing to the 2024 election, Trump said his sweeping victory demonstrated continued voter support. He told lawmakers he carried every swing state and won the popular vote “by millions,” arguing that those results contradict the idea that his party is headed for midterm losses.

“We won every swing state; we won the popular vote by millions; we won everything,” Trump said. “But they say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm.”

Trump also spoke about political loyalty, criticizing lawmakers who he said oppose his agenda regardless of the substance of legislation. He suggested that even proposals he views as broadly beneficial are sometimes rejected automatically by opponents unmoved by policy details.

In foreign policy remarks, Trump praised the U.S. operation in Venezuela over the weekend that led to the capture and arrest of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He called the mission “an amazing military feat” and “brilliant tactically.”

According to Trump, the operation involved “152 airplanes” and “a lot of boots on the ground,” and resulted in no American casualties. “On the other side, a lot of people were killed,” he said. “Unfortunately, I say that soldiers, Cubans, mostly Cubans, but many, many killed.”

Trump said the mission achieved surprise in part by shutting off electricity across large parts of the country.

He also criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., arguing that Democrats should acknowledge military success even when they oppose his broader agenda.

Trump’s remarks came as House Republicans prepare for the second half of the 119th Congress, with leadership focused on protecting their narrow majority and advancing major legislative priorities ahead of the 2026 midterms.
