The long-anticipated screen adaptation of The Talisman, the 1984 dark fantasy novel by Stephen King and Peter Straub, is no longer moving forward under the creative direction of the Duffer Brothers. The project, which had generated significant interest following its announcement in 2022, is no longer in development at Netflix, effectively halting the latest attempt to bring the novel to screen.
A Leap for Stephen King
“The Talisman” marked an early and notable collaboration between King and Straub, blending fantasy, horror, and mythic storytelling in a way that distinguished it from King’s more traditional works. The partnership itself was intensive and unconventional. As The Guardian previously reported,
“It took them four years to get started, and when they did, it was essentially writing in turns: doing the beginning and the end together, and then passing the narrative back and forth between themselves in a writing relay.”
The result was a novel with a distinctive tone that has remained compelling to readers for decades.
The Long Road to Adaptation

Despite its enduring popularity, “The Talisman” has become known for its troubled path toward adaptation. Before the Duffer Brothers’ involvement, multiple high-profile efforts failed to reach production. According to The Playlist, one of the more recent attempts involved a feature film developed by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and The Kennedy/Marshall Company, with director Mike Barker attached in 2019, though the project ultimately stalled.
The Duffer Brothers Give it A Go
Many fans viewed the Duffer Brothers’ anticipated version as a promising opportunity to finally break what has often been referred to as the book’s “adaptation curse.” However, that hope has now been dashed. Speaking on the project’s long history, Ross Duffer acknowledged the disappointment, as cited by CBR:
“When I interned, when I was really, you know, back in college at Kennedy Marshall, I remember reading, I think it was a movie script for “The Talisman.” So it’s been in development forever… I’m sorry that we were not the ones to break the curse.”
The Wait Continues

While “The Talisman” has never received a full-length feature film or television adaptation, it has appeared in other formats. CBR notes that the novel was adapted into a short film in 2008 and later into a graphic novel released in October 2009, demonstrating continued interest in the property across various mediums.
Hopes for The Talisman
At present, there are no confirmed plans for a new screen adaptation. Whether “The Talisman” will eventually reach the big screen remains uncertain. Should another creative team take on the challenge, expectations will be high that the adaptation honors both the novel’s legacy and the many years of anticipation surrounding it.
