NEW YORK — As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Times Square will host a groundbreaking double celebration: a patriotic ball drop just minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day and the first-ever Fourth of July ball drop in its history, America250 announced.
A “Surprise” Patriotic Ball Drop at 12:04 a.m.
Following the traditional New Year’s Eve ball drop, Times Square will relight the iconic ball at 12:04 a.m. on January 1, 2026, this time in a red, white, and blue America250 design. The moment will feature:
- A new video, “America Turns 250”.
- The first-ever post-midnight release of 2,000 pounds of red, white, and blue confetti.
- A pyrotechnic finale set to Ray Charles’ rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
“America250 will kick off the Semiquincentennial year on New Year’s Eve in Times Square—the most watched celebration on the planet—signaling that the largest and most inspiring celebration in our nation’s history is underway in 2026,” said Rosie Rios, chair of America250.
First-Ever Fourth of July Ball Drop
On July 3, 2026, the Times Square Ball will drop again—this time to celebrate Independence Day, marking the first time in history the ball has dropped outside of New Year’s Eve.
“This is more than a celebration—it’s a historic moment for America,” Rios said. “We’re bringing the country together to honor our past and inspire our future.”
Washington Monument to Glow as a “250-Foot Birthday Candle”
The commemorative events will extend beyond Times Square. From December 31, 2025, to January 5, 2026, the Washington Monument will become a canvas for a “sweeping visual narrative” of American history, including:
- A midnight countdown on December 31, illuminating the Monument as a towering 250-foot birthday candle.
- Nightly projections highlighting key moments in U.S. history, from independence to innovation.
Trump’s “Patriot Games” to Showcase Young Athletes
Adding to the 250th anniversary festivities, President Donald Trump announced plans for the “Patriot Games”, where the top male and female high school athletes from each state will compete in a nationwide sporting event.
“We’re celebrating America’s past, present, and future—starting with our youngest champions,” Trump said in a statement.
