Actor George Clooney and his family have formally relocated from the United States to France, where they have secured French citizenship and established a permanent residence, according to multiple published reports and Clooney’s own statements.

Clooney, his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney, and their twin children, Ella and Alexander, were granted French citizenship through a naturalization decree issued in late December 2025. The decree was published in France’s official government record, confirming the family’s legal status as French citizens.

According to reporting by Fox News, the family left Los Angeles in order to distance themselves from what Clooney described as the culture surrounding Hollywood. The report stated that the Clooneys deliberately uprooted their lives in the United States following the birth of their children and began building a long-term life in rural France.

Clooney discussed the move in an October interview with Esquire, explaining that the decision was driven by concerns about raising children in Los Angeles and the entertainment industry environment.

“You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it,” Clooney said. “But now, for them, it’s like—they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

He continued by describing his concerns about Hollywood’s influence on his children.

“I was worried about raising our kids in L. A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life,” Clooney said. “France—they kind of don’t give a shit about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

Public records and reporting indicate the family’s transition to France began several years earlier. According to Yahoo Entertainment, George and Amal Clooney purchased Domaine du Canadel, an 18th-century wine estate and farm in Brignoles, Provence, in August 2021. By late 2024 and early 2025, the property had become the family’s primary residence.

The December 27, 2025 naturalization decree formally completed the process, extending French citizenship to both adults and their children.

Beyond his personal relocation, Clooney remained politically active in recent years. He played a visible role in efforts urging President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 presidential race following Biden’s June debate performance. In a New York Times opinion column, Clooney wrote, “We are not going to win in November with this president,” adding, “This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and Congress member and governor who I’ve spoken with in private.”

After Vice President Kamala Harris lost the general election to President Donald Trump, Clooney faced criticism from some Democratic activists for his involvement in the pressure campaign surrounding Biden’s withdrawal.

As of early 2026, Clooney and his family are residing full time in France, where they hold citizenship and have stated their intention to raise their children outside the United States.
