Liberal billionaire George Soros and members of his family have donated more than $71,000 to political campaigns backing New York Attorney General Letitia James since 2019, according to a report published Sunday by the New York Post.
The total includes $31,000 directed toward James’ 2026 reelection effort, the report said, citing state campaign contribution records. Those donations include $18,000 given personally by Soros in July 2024 and an additional $13,000 contributed by his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Soros, in May. When combined with earlier giving, the Soros family has provided James with roughly $40,000 more since 2019, according to the report.
The Post also reported that the figure does not include indirect political backing James receives through organizations funded by Soros. Those groups include the Working Families Party, which has received millions of dollars from Soros-backed entities over the years.
Soros’ Open Society Foundations have directed more than $865,000 to the New York branch of the Working Families Party since 2018, the report said. James’ early political career was closely tied to the party. In 2003, she became the first Working Families Party candidate elected in New York, winning a City Council seat in Brooklyn.
During her 2018 campaign for attorney general, James ran as a Democrat alongside then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and downplayed her affiliation with the Working Families Party. She later accepted the party’s endorsement again during her 2022 reelection campaign and has continued to advance policies aligned with its agenda, according to the report.
Michael Henry, a Republican candidate seeking to unseat James in 2026, criticized Soros’ support in comments included in the report. “George Soros has spent years financing the radical left’s most extreme projects, and the outcome is almost always the same: instability and disorder that is destroying our state,” Henry said.
James has drawn national attention for her office’s civil fraud case against President Donald Trump, which focused on valuations tied to his business holdings. Critics have described the case as politically motivated lawfare, arguing it relied on novel legal theories and penalties intended to damage Trump’s business interests and political prospects.
In August, Trump secured a significant legal victory when a New York appellate court overturned more than $500 million in fines that had been imposed earlier in the case.
James has also faced legal scrutiny herself. In October, the Department of Justice brought mortgage fraud charges related to a property she owns in Virginia. That case was later dismissed after a judge ruled that the federal prosecutor who brought the charges had been unlawfully appointed.
