Americans traveling for Christmas this year are getting an unexpected financial boost at the pump, as gas prices have fallen to their lowest level in four years just as holiday travel reaches peak levels.

An estimated 122.4 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between Saturday, Dec. 20, and Thursday, Jan. 1, according to AAA. Of those travelers, more than 109.5 million are projected to drive, while over 8 million will take domestic flights.

The national average price for gasoline stood at $2.855 per gallon on Dec. 22, according to AAA, marking the lowest holiday-season level since 2020. By comparison, the national average price of gas in 2024 was $3.04 per gallon. The all-time record high occurred on June 14, 2022, when the average price reached $5.016 per gallon.

AAA data show that drivers in at least 11 states are paying well below the national average. A full breakdown is available through AAA’s regularly updated gas price list.

Among the lowest prices recorded nationwide were Oklahoma at $2.293 per gallon, Arkansas at $2.418, Iowa at $2.430, and Colorado at $2.441. Texas followed at $2.467, with Wisconsin at $2.472 and Tennessee at $2.474. Kansas posted an average of $2.487, Louisiana $2.488, Mississippi $2.486, and Missouri $2.498.

The decline comes as millions of families take to the roads for year-end trips, easing travel costs at a time when expenses related to lodging, food, and holiday celebrations typically rise.

AAA officials say the combination of lower fuel prices and strong travel demand reflects improving conditions for drivers compared to recent holiday seasons, offering what many motorists are viewing as a timely Christmas gift at the pump.
