New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will be sworn into office next week by New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, according to an announcement from his transition team announced Monday.
Mamdani is scheduled to take the oath of office twice. The first ceremony will occur at midnight on New Year’s Eve, when James will administer the oath. He will then be sworn in again during a public ceremony on the afternoon of Jan. 1, with Sanders presiding. Mamdani’s term officially begins at 12:01 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
“It is an honor to be sworn in by two leaders I have admired for years: Attorney General Tish James and Sen. Bernie Sanders,” Mamdani said in a statement. “I can think of no better leaders to help usher in a new era for New York City.”
According to the transition team, Mamdani will be sworn in alongside Comptroller-elect Mark Levine and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. All three officials are expected to deliver remarks during the Jan. 1 ceremony, which will include musical performances and interfaith elements.
Organizers estimate that between 40,000 and 50,000 people will attend the celebration, with Broadway south of Canal Street closed for the event, the New York Post reported.
Sanders, who caucuses with Democrats, actively campaigned alongside Mamdani during the race. In his June endorsement, Sanders praised Mamdani’s “inspirational” campaign and described his leadership as “visionary.” Sanders previously administered former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s oath of office at the start of de Blasio’s second term in January 2018.
Mamdani defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in last month’s mayoral election, winning 50.8 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 41.3 percent. The democratic socialist also became the first mayoral candidate since 1969 to receive more than one million votes citywide.
