U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he is appointing Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as the new special envoy to Greenland, elevating a sitting state governor to a role tied closely to U.S. national security and Arctic strategy.
“Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
The White House did not immediately provide additional details about the scope of Landry’s responsibilities, the duration of the appointment, or how the role would fit within existing diplomatic and national security structures. Representatives for Landry also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has long been viewed by U.S. officials as strategically vital because of its location in the Arctic, proximity to major shipping routes, and potential access to critical minerals. The United States maintains a military presence there through Pituffik Space Base, formerly Thule Air Base, which plays a key role in missile defense and space surveillance.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance, including during his first term, when he floated the idea of the United States acquiring the territory—remarks that drew swift pushback from Denmark and Greenlandic leaders.
Landry, a Republican and close ally of Trump, became governor of Louisiana in January 2024 after previously serving as the state’s attorney general. His appointment raises questions about whether he would need to resign or temporarily step aside from his gubernatorial duties to serve as envoy. It was not immediately clear Sunday whether the role would require full-time service or how potential conflicts of interest would be addressed.
The announcement comes as the Arctic region draws increasing attention from global powers amid climate change, expanding commercial routes, and heightened geopolitical competition. Trump did not indicate when Landry would formally assume the role or when he might begin diplomatic engagements related to Greenland.
