A dog named Tangi, who was found sealed inside a taped cardboard box outside the Pennsylvania SPCA in freezing temperatures, has been adopted and is now settling into a new home.
The Pennsylvania SPCA said in a Facebook post that Tangi was discovered outside the shelter on the morning of Dec. 10, when temperatures were below 30 degrees. The dog had been left inside a closed box, which was spotted by a passerby before staff arrived.

“When we opened it, scared eyes looked up at us,” the organization wrote in its initial post. According to the SPCA, Tangi was “shaking and so stressed that she was hypersalivating,” appearing overwhelmed by her surroundings. Despite that, the shelter said, “the moment a hand reached toward her, she leaned in — gentle and searching for comfort despite everything she had been through.”

The shelter said Tangi stayed close to staff throughout the day as she underwent medical testing and behavioral exams.
“She followed staff closely, rested her head against anyone who knelt beside her, and cried when she was left alone,” the SPCA wrote, adding that “all she wanted was to feel safe.”
A handwritten note taped to the outside of the box explained the circumstances behind her surrender. The note read, in part, “I have no other option. It’s either eviction or let the dog go.” The writer added, “I have filled out adoption apps, but nothing has happened… She has all her shots. Good dog. Her name is Tangi.”
The Pennsylvania SPCA said it sympathized with the situation described in the note while emphasizing the importance of safety.
“We truly sympathize with the circumstances her previous owner may have been facing,” the organization wrote, “but we also want everyone, including pets, to remain safe.”
The shelter encouraged anyone needing help with a pet to contact a shelter or rescue directly. It also advised anyone needing to surrender an animal urgently to come inside and speak with staff.
After she was found, Tangi was placed on a temporary stray hold in case an owner came forward. During that time, the SPCA shared updates about her condition and temperament, noting that she was gentle and affectionate.
“For now, she is safe, and so, so loved,” the organization said.
Just days later, the shelter shared a joyful update.
On Dec. 14, the Pennsylvania SPCA announced that Tangi had been adopted.

“We are over the moon to share that Tangi has been adopted!” the organization wrote in a follow-up Facebook post. “We are so excited for her new chapter filled with love, snuggles, and adventures. Thank you to everyone who shared her story and helped her find her perfect family. Happy life, sweet girl.”
What began as a distressing discovery outside the shelter ended with a new beginning — one marked by safety, care and a permanent home.
