The one thing on the Christmas list for the Calaveras High School boys’ soccer team was to finish the preseason with a win.
Unfortunately for the Red Hawks, that gift was not delivered.
Calaveras suffered a 1-0 loss to Modesto on Friday night in Modesto. The Red Hawks finished preseason play with an overall record of 5-4-1 and have lost their last two games.
Despite the back-to-back road losses, Calaveras head coach Rob Leetham remains confident his team will be ready for stiff competition once Mother Lode League play begins in January.
“We talked before the game that it would feel a lot better over break with a win behind us,” Leetham said. “However, under the circumstances, our confidence level is still high. We stayed right with D1 Modesto tonight without two key starters. We have played a few other big schools, and I think the competition has been perfect to prepare us for league.”
Calaveras and Modesto were tied 0-0 for most of the match until Modesto scored on a free kick with 30 seconds remaining to send the Red Hawks back to San Andreas with a disappointing loss.
The Red Hawks will begin Mother Lode League play on Jan. 6 against the Bret Harte Bullfrogs in Angels Camp. Calaveras will return to its home field on Jan. 8 against the Riverbank Bruins.
