According to reports from Politico, U.S. and Russian officials are expected to meet in Miami this weekend, with the Russian delegation including Kirill Dmitriev, President Vladimir Putin’s investment envoy. When questioned about the upcoming meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that contacts with U.S. counterparts are being arranged.
“We are indeed preparing certain contacts with our American counterparts in order to receive information about the results of the work that the Americans have done with the Europeans and with Ukraine,” Peskov stated.
The U.S. has engaged in separate discussions with Russia, Kyiv, and European leaders on proposals to end the war in Ukraine, though no agreement has been reached. On Wednesday, Putin warned that Russia would seize additional Ukrainian territory by force if Kyiv and European leaders—whom he referred to as “young pigs”—failed to engage with U.S. peace proposals.
European leaders have reiterated their support for Kyiv, warning that a Russian victory in Ukraine could embolden Moscow to eventually target a NATO member. The Kremlin has repeatedly dismissed such claims as “nonsense.”
Currently, Russia controls 19.2% of Ukraine, including the Crimea Peninsula (annexed in 2014), most of the Donbas region, significant portions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and parts of four other regions. The upcoming talks in Miami could mark a critical step in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
