The surviving terrorist in the Bondi Beach terror attack, Naveed Akram, has regained consciousness and is currently under police interrogation from his hospital bed.
Akram, along with his father Sajid Akram, carried out a mass shooting on December 14, 2025, during a Jewish festival at Bondi Beach in Sydney, resulting in at least 15 fatalities. Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police at the scene, while Naveed Akram was critically injured and placed in an induced coma until recently.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the father-son duo traveled to the Philippines for military-style training prior to returning to Australia.
Authorities believe the attack was motivated by Islamic State ideology, an assessment echoed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described it as a terrorist act inspired by the group.
A homemade Islamic State flag and improvised explosive devices were recovered from the vehicle used by the attackers.
Naveed Akram had previously been under scrutiny by Australian intelligence services in 2019, with an investigation lasting six months before being closed.
The gunmen, identified as Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, opened fire on a crowd of around 1,000 people gathered for the Jewish holiday event on Sunday evening. The death toll stands at 15 victims, with reports indicating it could rise to 16, while over 40 others were wounded, including two police officers. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87, including a Holocaust survivor, a 10-year-old child, and a Chabad rabbi – a stark reminder of the barbarity targeted at the Jewish community.
Sajid Akram was killed at the scene by responding police officers, while Naveed Akram was critically injured and remains hospitalized in a coma. Today he came out of a coma and being interrogated.
Naveed Akram and Sajid Akram both were seen in pro-Palestinian protest in Sydney.
