Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino is expected to decide within weeks whether to continue at the bureau following an internal report critical of current leadership, according to people familiar with the matter.

Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino is expected to make a decision about his future at the Federal Bureau of Investigation within the next several weeks, Fox News reported.
The sources pushed back on recent reports suggesting Bongino has already vacated his FBI office, saying that is not the case, while acknowledging that a potential departure remains under consideration. One source familiar with the situation told Fox News Digital that Bongino has not yet made any determination regarding whether he will remain in the role.
Bongino’s position has come under heightened scrutiny in recent weeks alongside FBI Director Kash Patel, following the circulation of a 115-page internal report authored by an alliance of active-duty and retired FBI personnel. The report sharply criticized the bureau’s direction under the current leadership, portraying it as lacking strategic clarity since Patel and Bongino assumed their posts earlier this year.
Bongino and Patel have publicly rejected the report’s conclusions, defending a broad reform agenda they say is focused on restoring accountability, improving performance standards, and refocusing the bureau on its core mission.
“When the director and I moved forward with these reforms, we expected some noise from the small circle of disgruntled former agents still loyal to the old Comey–Wray model,” Bongino told Fox News in response to the criticism. “That was never our audience. Our responsibility is to the American people. And under the new leadership team, the bureau is delivering results this country hasn’t seen in decades — tighter accountability, tougher performance standards, billions saved and a mission-first culture. That’s how you restore trust.”
The internal report gained wider public attention after New York Post columnist and Fox News contributor Miranda Devine wrote about it last week, stating that active-duty and retired agents and analysts had issued a “damning” assessment of the bureau’s leadership since Patel and Bongino took office. Devine said last week that the document accused senior officials of prioritizing personal reputations over institutional stability.
Bongino responded forcefully to the criticism, accusing Devine of relying on what he described as unsubstantiated claims from disgruntled former employees opposed to leadership changes. He said the attacks were predictable and timed to coincide with major internal reforms.
“You can always count on Miranda for a timed hit piece when the Director and I make big changes,” Bongino wrote on X. “Miranda prefers the old-guard. I don’t. Full steam ahead.”
As debate over the bureau’s direction continues, Bongino’s pending decision is expected to shape the next phase of leadership at the FBI, which has undergone significant structural and cultural changes under the current administration.
