President Donald Trump said the United States will carry out “very serious retaliation” following an attack in Syria that killed two U.S. service members and an American civilian interpreter, describing the incident as an ambush carried out by Islamic State operatives.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said the Americans were targeted during the attack and emphasized that the United States would not tolerate continued assaults on its forces operating overseas.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the attack occurred in a volatile region of Syria not fully under government control and confirmed that three additional U.S. service members were wounded but are recovering.
“We mourn the loss of three Great American Patriots in Syria, two soldiers, and one Civilian Interpreter,” Trump wrote. “Likewise, we pray for the three injured soldiers who, it has just been confirmed, are doing well.”
Trump identified the assault as an ISIS attack and said Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa was “extremely angry and disturbed” by the incident. He warned that the attack would not go unanswered.
“This was an ISIS attack against the U.S., and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria, that is not fully controlled by them,” Trump wrote. “There will be very serious retaliation.”
The deaths mark one of the deadliest attacks on U.S. personnel in Syria in recent years and come as American forces continue counterterrorism operations aimed at preventing Islamic State from reconstituting in the region. Trump said the United States would continue to defend its forces and respond decisively to threats against Americans abroad.
