Newly released documents reveal how Jeffrey Epstein systematically manipulated search results and academic ties to bury his criminal past behind a veneer of scientific philanthropy.

Newly disclosed emails and internal documents expose how convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein orchestrated a calculated campaign to rewrite his public image, leveraging elite academic institutions and high-profile connections to suppress news of his crimes, according to a detailed report by the Daily Caller News Foundation. The strategy, described by one aide as a game of “wack-a-mole,” involved flooding search engines with curated content portraying Epstein as a patron of cutting-edge science—effectively burying reports of his 2008 conviction for soliciting underage girls.
The House Oversight Committee released emails on Nov. 12 detailing Epstein’s collaboration with publicists and academics to dominate search results with links to his scientific donations. Two now-defunct websites, www.jeffreyepsteinscience.com and www.jeffreyepstein.org, were central to this effort, alongside the Edge Foundation-funded Edge.org, which documented gatherings of scientists and tech leaders bankrolled by Epstein. The sites, archived by the Internet Archive, framed Epstein as a visionary benefactor, featuring posts like “The Value of Complexity as Seen by Jeffrey Epstein” and “Jeffrey Epstein: Thoughts on Quantum Computing.”
Epstein’s campaign extended to manipulating his Wikipedia page, where edits emphasized his philanthropy while downplaying his criminal history. Al Seckel, a prominent atheist author and optical illusionist, spearheaded the effort, describing it in a December 2010 email as a mission to replace “toxic references” with “good ones.” Seckel, who was romantically linked to Isabel Maxwell, sister of Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, died in 2015.
The documents also reveal Epstein’s deep financial ties to Harvard and MIT, institutions that became unwitting accomplices in his reputation rehabilitation. Harvard economist Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary and Harvard president, facilitated Epstein’s establishment of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED) in 2003. Epstein referred to PED as “my istittue [SIC] at harvard” in a November 2018 email, inviting New Age guru Deepak Chopra to a lunch with Harvard geneticist George Church, who accepted an estimated $2 million from Epstein-connected donors.
Harvard’s 2020 fact-finding report acknowledged Epstein’s frequent visits to PED, often accompanied by young women, and confirmed his office space on campus. The university announced a new probe into Summers’ ties to Epstein on Nov. 19, prompting Summers to step down from his teaching role. MIT, however, has not announced a renewed investigation, despite its own 2020 report detailing Epstein’s donations to the MIT Media Lab.
Epstein’s network included LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a former MIT Media Lab advisor, and J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management CEO Mary Erdoes, who maintained contact with Epstein while he was a J.P. Morgan client, according to a Nov. 19 Senate memo. Hoffman, whom former President Donald Trump called a “sleazebag” on Nov. 19, denied any engagement with Epstein beyond MIT fundraising. Summers apologized on Nov. 17, stating, “I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they have caused.”
The emails further expose Epstein’s influence over the Edge Group, an exclusive club for scientific lectures that hosted annual “Billionaires’ Dinners” from 1999 to 2015. Attendees included MIT’s disgraced former Media Lab Director Joi Ito, who resigned in 2019 after his Epstein-funded grants were exposed, and theoretical physicist Murray Gell-Mann, whose research Epstein funded. MIT quantum scientist Seth Lloyd, who accepted a $60,000 personal gift from Epstein, apologized in 2019, admitting his actions “helped Mr. Epstein protect his reputation, and I disempowered his victims.”
Epstein’s campaign extended to Arizona State theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss, who organized a 2006 conference on Epstein’s private island, Little Saint James. Krauss, who remained in contact with Epstein during and after his incarceration, proposed a “men of the world conference” featuring Bill Clinton, Al Franken, and Woody Allen in an April 2018 email.
The documents also show Epstein’s publicists advising him to model his online presence after figures like Prince Andrew and Bill Clinton, who successfully managed their reputations despite scandals. One publicist recommended using Reputation.com to further manipulate search results, while another highlighted the need to “update your website immediately” with content from Edge.org.
Epstein’s efforts persisted until his 2019 arrest. In 2017, a publicist placed an op-ed in the Huffington Post, framing Epstein as a counterforce to Trump’s “anti-science” budget cuts. The piece promoted his funding of Harvard’s Nowak, MIT’s Lloyd, and others, generating yet another positive search result.
MIT has not responded to requests for further comment beyond its 2020 report. Harvard did not reply to inquiries. Hoffman could not be reached for comment.
