What began as a fun family visit to San Diego changed in an instant. On Sunday, November 23, while a football game played in the background, Alexis and Brandon’s sweet black lab-mix, Sadie, slipped out the front door of the home they were staying in and disappeared.

The carefree trip turned into a race against time. Alexis and Brandon followed Sadie’s Air Tag along the coast, hoping it would lead them back to her. Instead, it led them toward the ocean—where strangers were already sounding the alarm.

In Ocean Beach, a surfer ran up to a lifeguard truck with urgent news.
“Unit 100, I just had a surfer run up to the truck. He’s saying there’s a dog that’s on the jetty.”

Sadie had been swept into the Mission Bay channel and carried by the current. Lifeguards and a U.S. Coast Guard small boat launched into the water, searching as the minutes stretched on. From shore and from sea, everyone was looking for the same small black shape against an endless blue.

After an hour with no sightings, hope began to feel fragile. The search was nearing its end. Out on the water, the lifeguards gathered for one last push, holding onto the belief that Sadie might still be alive.
“Please let us find this dog.”

Then, just as the search was being called off, something caught their attention offshore near South Mission Beach. A dark figure. Movement.

It was Sadie.

Lifeguards rushed toward her, relief and disbelief colliding as they realized the frightened but determined dog was still paddling. She was exhausted, but alive—ready to be brought home.

At Lifeguard Headquarters, Sadie was reunited with Alexis and Brandon.
“We literally were standing right there… and we kind of just held our breath,” Alexis said as they waited for news.
When they heard the words they had been praying for—“And the dog is alive”—everything else disappeared.
“We kind of just started crying right away.”

The radio confirmed the happy ending:
“Dispatch, the dog's been reunited with the owner at the reception dock and all units are clear.”

For Alexis and Brandon, gratitude is now forever tied to that moment.
“We are forever grateful and thankful for all of you guys’s help.”

Sadie’s rescue is more than a remarkable reunion—it’s a reminder of what happens when compassion, persistence, and hope come together. Every day on the water brings unpredictable challenges, and this time, those efforts led to a miracle that brought a family back together.
