A serious situation is unfolding in several British prisons as seven pro-Palestine activists connected to the recently proscribed group Palestine Action continue a prolonged hunger strike that lawyers warn could soon become fatal.

According to the law firm Imran Khan & Partners, which represents the detainees, the inmates have reached a critical stage in their protest, refusing food in an effort to demand bail, better prison conditions, and the shutdown of a UK-based defence firm linked to Israel.

The lawyers warn that if the government does not act, “there is a real and increasingly likely potential that young British citizens will die in prison, having never even been convicted of an offence.”

The hunger strike began on November 2nd, the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, and has stretched for more than a month.

Some of the detainees have now gone over 38 days without food, while an eighth participant is striking every other day due to diabetes. Five of the activists have already been hospitalised, a sharp rise from the two originally reported, raising severe concerns about their rapidly declining health.

All seven hunger strikers were arrested in connection with two high-profile sabotage raids linked to Palestine Action.

The first occurred on August 6, 2024, when activists allegedly used a prison transport van as a battering ram to break into Elbit Systems in Patchway, Bristol. Once inside, they are accused of attempting to destroy equipment and fend off authorities.

During court hearings, it was also revealed that a female police officer suffered a broken back after reportedly being struck twice with a sledgehammer by another suspect, who is not among the hunger strikers. The four Elbit-linked strikers are charged with aggravated burglary, criminal damage, and, in some cases, violent disorder.

The second case involves a June 20, 2025 raid on RAF Brize Norton. Activists are accused of sneaking into the major military base undetected and using paint-filled fire extinguishers to spray into the engines of Royal Air Force transport aircraft.

The three detainees connected to this incident face charges of conspiracy to enter a prohibited place and conspiracy to commit criminal damage.

Several critics, including MP Zarah Sultana of the pro-Palestine Your Party, argue that the activists have been subjected to excessive pre-trial detention, with some held for more than a year despite typical UK guidelines limiting pre-trial imprisonment to six months. Sultana claims their continued detention violates their rights and insists they should be granted bail immediately.

The hunger strikers have made a series of demands ranging from personal prison conditions to national political changes.

These include immediate bail, unrestricted mail and visitation rights, the removal of Palestine Action from the UK’s terrorist list, and the complete shutdown of Elbit Systems facilities in Britain.

Their supporters argue that the arrests amount to political targeting, while critics maintain that the group’s actions cross into dangerous and unlawful sabotage.

Left-wing outlet Novara Media has accused Britain’s mainstream press of ignoring the hunger strike for more than a month, calling the silence an “establishment media blackout.”

They further criticized the government after Justice Secretary David Lammy claimed he had “never heard” of the hunger strike, an assertion challenged by MPs who say they had written to him about the situation.

Those on hunger strike include Kamran Ahmed, Teuta Hoxha, Qesser Zuhrah, and Heba Muraisi from the Elbit case, as well as Amy Gardiner-Gibson, Jon Cink, and “queer activist” Amu Gib from the RAF Brize Norton raid. The diabetic part-time striker is identified as Lewie Chiaramello.

With their health worsening by the day and no resolution in sight, the crisis is intensifying. Lawyers warn that without urgent intervention, the protest may result in deaths  a development that would spark major political, legal, and public backlash. For now, the hunger strike continues, and the clock is ticking.
