Video game developer and publisher Coffee Stain Group began trading on the Nasdaq First North exchange on Thursday following its official separation from Swedish gaming giant Embracer. The listing marks a significant milestone for the company as it steps out independently with a portfolio that includes popular titles such as Goat Simulator, Valheim, and Deep Rock Galactic.
The spin-off forms a key part of Embracer’s broader restructuring strategy, which has included major asset sales, studio closures, and additional listings to stabilize the business. Earlier in the year, the group listed board game maker Asmodee as part of this ongoing effort to streamline operations and strengthen its long-term financial footing. By placing its independent studios under the Coffee Stain brand, Embracer aims to give the newly separated business more freedom to invest, develop, and expand without the constraints of the larger group’s debt challenges.
Coffee Stain’s shares opened at 26.62 Swedish crowns, valuing the company at roughly 5.7 billion crowns, or about $615 million based on its 214.2 million outstanding shares. Despite the strong opening, the stock slipped nearly 10% to around 24 crowns by mid-morning trading, reflecting cautious market sentiment as investors assess the company’s standalone prospects.
Embracer, which has been trading without Coffee Stain rights since Monday, experienced a sharp adjustment in its valuation as a result of the separation. The removal of Coffee Stain from its portfolio wiped out about 30% of Embracer’s market value earlier in the week. Shares continued to fall on Thursday, down about 2% at 59.6 crowns, placing its market capitalization around 13 billion crowns—significantly below the 18.7 billion crowns it commanded before Coffee Stain was carved out.
Despite the financial turbulence surrounding the restructuring, Embracer has positioned Coffee Stain for a stable start. In November, the parent company confirmed that Coffee Stain would take on no debt and would hold a pro-forma net cash position of 500 million crowns as of September 30. This clean financial slate is expected to support future investments in new games, expansions of current titles, and potential acquisitions as the company charts its independent growth trajectory.
