WASHINGTON, D.C. — The War Department has unveiled GenAI.mil, a new AI platform designed to transform the U.S. military into an “AI-first” enterprise. The first model deployed on the platform is Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government, marking the beginning of a rollout of several frontier AI systems accessible to all Pentagon civilians, contractors, and military personnel.
The initiative supports the White House AI Action Plan announced earlier this year and advances the July mandate issued by President Donald J. Trump, which directs the Department to secure America’s superiority in artificial intelligence. With this launch, new AI capabilities are now available on desktops across the Pentagon and U.S. military installations worldwide.
According to the Department, Gemini for Government will enable intelligent agent workflows, boost rapid experimentation, and drive a cultural shift toward AI-powered decision-making. Officials say the technology places unmatched analytical power directly into the hands of American warfighters.
“There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance,” said Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering. “AI is America’s next Manifest Destiny, and we’re ensuring that we dominate this new frontier.”
The GenAI.mil platform was built by the AI Rapid Capabilities Cell within the War Department’s Office of Research & Engineering. Officials describe it as a key milestone in reviving the nation’s warrior ethos, rebuilding military readiness, and strengthening deterrence through technological superiority.
War Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that AI is now central to the Department’s mission across all domains.
“We are pushing all of our chips in on artificial intelligence as a fighting force,” Hegseth said. “AI tools present boundless opportunities to increase efficiency, and we are thrilled to witness AI’s future positive impact across the War Department.”
The Department is offering no-cost AI training to all personnel, aiming to accelerate adoption and build confidence in daily AI use. All tools on GenAI.mil are certified for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Impact Level 5 (IL5) security, enabling safe operational deployment.
Gemini for Government includes natural-language interfaces, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and grounding through Google Search to reduce misinformation and improve reliability.
Officials say GenAI.mil is a major step in America’s broader AI revolution, positioning frontier AI as a standard tool for every warfighter and reinforcing U.S. leadership in global AI development.
